Pondering the purchase of one of these old things, and I've a couple of questions. First, did they come with an optional "hard top"? Essential for the winter :) And second, what engines were available in the later models - 2.6, 2.8? I guess none had 4wd...

I know they're quite long in the tooth now and don't exactly handle well (I used to run an Audi 80 saloon), this is more for relaxed cruising. On the plus side it was built like a tank and would probably have gone on forever. Anyone on here own one and would like to share their opinion?

Hi Zax, I've owned a 2.8 for a year now and it's been superb and still looks great. It's no sports car but the engine is soo torquey (sp) that it makes cruising a dream. Just got back from a few weeks touring round France where it was effortless.

I'd certainly recommend one for the money, if you have any questions drop me an email.

Cheers
Phil

the later cabriolets (96 on) also had the 1.8 20v engine the same unit used in the a4, which is a far more economical option to the 2.6, and 2.8 v6. (but doesnt sound half as nice!).

The only problem I had with one was the cables that run through the boot hinges. In time these breakdown and cost about £400 (in parts alone) to replace. Check they are not already breaking. Once broken the roof will not operate as the car believes the boot is open!
