Looking for help and/or recommendations. I have a VW Golf Mk4 Gti turbo. It has a miss fire in cylinder No 3. My mechanic has checked the plugs, pencil coil and injector and these are not the problem. He also checked the compression which came up as 10, 10, 9, 9 so it's not that either. He says it's a deeper problem with the ECU and i need to find someone who works with or specialises in these older VW's. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of such a mechanic in the Southampton area ?
Also am i posting in the correct place ?
All help greatly appreciated.

JKM motorsport.

I doubt it’s an ecu issue.

Just a feeling. What did he do to test the injectors/plugs/coilpacks?? Did he check the coilpack loom?

What errors were stored on the ecu?

He tested all those things by changing them to see if they were the issue. Yes he checked the coilpack loom. I'm glad you asked that because I had written it down in a hurry and couldn't read my writing..lol. No errors showed up.

So no errors? How does he know its cylinder 3 then?

Check the ignition amplifier too. This can cause misfires on random cylinders.

thebraketester I don't know but he is an old school mechanic who likes to check everything before doing the work.
MDMA I will ask him about that tomorrow as someone else has mentioned that also.

Do you know where i can source an ignition amplifier ? Is it also called something else as the guy i spoke to at TPS VW parts did not recognise that name. The part he thought i meant was around £200. Does that seem right ?

I also found this but as it's so cheap I'm uncertain of the quality.

Move the coilpack from cylinder to see if the misfire moves with it, if it stays on 3 it maybe the spark plug or coil pack plug/loom.
