Android Auto troubles 67 Golf vs Moto G6

Anyone have any experience/solutions with a Motorola G6 not connecting to Android Auto?

Continuously in a loop of connect/disconnect with the car displaying (Paraphrasing) a notification about setting permissions.
As far as I can tell the app on the phone has all the permissions switch on.
Tried different USB-C cables.
An old Samsung S6 I had lying in a drawer does work so I'm not blaming the car.
The phone does connect to a PC for data transfer so assuming that feature uses the same pins as such for comms I don't believe the USB-C socket is damaged.
