I took my Audi in for an inspection service today and got a call suggesting I have the pan roof serviced. My previous Audi had a pan roof as did my wife’s and neither needed servicing, though her car (SQ5) did creak and was sorted under warranty. So is it now the case that Audi charge extra for something that previously would be fixed under warranty?

Daylight robbery springs to mind but I’m long enough in the tooth to know how it goes, goodwill and loyalty are firmly in the past for me.

I had same thoughts with my allroad pano roof but in end just decided to let them do it. I had heard of some issues with pano roofs and feared the worst if I elected not to get it done as car was newish to me. A year later the film of grease is still evident on the edge of the roof and it’s operating perfectly - which is as it should be. I am not sure that the roof service made a difference but I’d already extended Audi warranty and the service pack was so cheap on a 3yr old car I just bit the bullet.

They can fail due to dry runners and bearings, bit of copper grease sorts it. How much do they want for it? It would take you a hour or so to do yourself plus the grease. I would just have the dealer do it myself

I can’t remember exactly what they quoted but surely they don’t use copper seal? I will probably use a bit of silicon gel if it does start making a noise, but I think this is an utter rip off.

Definitely don't use copper grease. This contains petroleum and will damage the rubber seals.

The OEM lubricant is a rare and very expensive PFPE based grease (the nearest equivalent would probably be something like "krytox 205").

Watch the price by local dealer quoted something ridiculous, I later checked with others
and it should be in the region of £125 to £175 incl Vat

It is a scheduled service item and due every 2 years.

Q5 sunroofs creaking is almost a "they all do that sir" - I think it's a slightly crap design. Even had customer have complete new ones under warranty to get the noise back a couple of years later. Keeping them serviced and the seals lubricated helps but they're rarely silent for long.

The parcel shelf rattle always comes back too!

The pano roof on my R is fine so far (touch wood), but the one on my last X5 failed and I took it to the sunroof centre in Bristol, highly recommended by Honest John, who fixed it at half the price the main dealer had quoted and while I waited, though it did take 2 - 3 hours.

Interestingly though, he told me that the roof was actually made by Webasto, so the roofs that VAG use could also be Webasto items too. Whether it makes any difference I don't know though.

Krytox is indeed very expensive if that’s what they use.

Had to share. My Golf R is going in for a minor service at the dealer and I enquired about a sunroof service and have just been quoted £205!!!

I immediatley told them to take it off the work schedule. Didn't even ask if VAT was included (don't think it is).
