Hi, we recently upgraded our old Citroen C1 (which has fast become tough to keep with a 3-year old) to a 2015 Skoda Fabia SE Estate, which we pick up on Wednesday.

I've been doing a lot of searching and found a lot of good things about these cars, I've only seen the odd negative word about them, which I'm hoping is representative of the car.

What I'm wondering is I've had a habit of not put as much love into our C1 as I possibly should have done outside of an MOT & service. Is there anything about the Fabia estate that an owner should know about to watch for? Give especial care to? I've heard a lot of raving about reliability, but I've always been sceptical about turbo-charged every day cars from horror stories for example.

Having test driven it and fell in love with it immediately, any info or "gotchas" would be great to know about, thanks!

Dr G

Welcome to Pistonheads.

Service annualy on the 10k intervals, not the drawn out, 2 year/20k longlife.

Have a good garage service it (not just the cheapest) and listen to their recommendations.

Sturdy cars; my brother in law has had his from new in 2015 with virtually no problems to speak of.

Thanks for that! Having driven it for the first time properly last night (outside of a test drive, exploring the car) - man is it a different world from our C1. I think I'm going to have to adjust my driving style for this!

I've often heard stories from a number of people with turbo failures after a couple of years. Should I brace for something like this? Bearing in mind they drove Peugeot's, Citroen's and Nissan Qashqai's.

Turbos can fail due to people ragging the car, getting the turbo red hot and then turning the engine off which lets the oil cook in the turbo. Trick is to drive the car gently for the last few miles of journey so the turbo cools a bit before switching the engine off. That and regular oil changes as Dr.G says.

Can't talk about the MK3( which a 2015 model is), but if they've improved on things like door cards leaking / washer pipes popping off when less than 50% screen wash is used then car is a lot better. I run a 2004 MK1, with a proper 1442 TDI engine, and wonder if the 1000 cc turbo petrol versions will get to over 100k, without problems. On the previous models, droplinks and front inner bushes were a problem. Inner front bushes are best replaced with powerflex over the plastic version of the metalastic ones fitted by Skoda. I'd also look at the speed rating of the tyres, as the tyres fitted on mine ( factory fit) were way below the performance of the engine. I like the look of the MK3, but I don't like the engine options.
