Hi guys fairly new on here so don't know if in the right place so forgive me. My missus drives s Golf Mk3 Gti 8v and when you hit 5k rpm it cuts out as though you are hitting the limiter although the red line is at 6100 rpm. Have had all the timing checked. The car is a 98R one owner with full main dealer history. Anybody any ideas. Many thanks.

Har! Take the dizzy cap off and have a look at the rotor.
Itll have a number (or it should have) on a little sticker on the side of it that designates its cut out speed.
Its a crude centrifugal type of cut out that has a centre contact in the rotor supported by a spring that when the engine speed gets to approx the cut out speed allows the centrifugal cut out to...er...cut out...it shorts the ht spark.

If its had the wrong one fitted, youll get the symptoms you describe.
You can either remove the cut out (are ya feeling lucky? and do you really wanna do that?) or get the correct one for the job.

Hth.

Edited to add: OOps. It may not have the rotor cut out depending on model/year.
