As the title says I’m looking at the golf Volkswagen Golf 1.4 GT SPORT TSI 3d 168 BHP not entirely sure what mk it is I’m looking for some general feed back more about the engine before I commit to purchasing it .
The car has done 70k it is in very good condition with full service history. The garage it’s self has said will be serviced and timing chain / cam belt can be replaced which I would prefer it to be changed as it’s done 70k.

I’m new to VW’s i have read very mix reviews on the engine some say it’s good some say stay well clear so now I thought I would come on here and seek some information . Sorry for the long winded thread just I’ve been bitten on the arse when I had a bmw 3 series and the timing change went on that and warranty wouldn’t cover it so I forked out 1200 quid to get that replaced then sold it .

Thank you in advanced anyone that can give some advice on the engine of the golf .

If it's the one with a turbocharger as well as a supercharger, then it's the one to avoid.

As p4cks said, avoid like the plague!
Get yourself a nice GTi for your money instead, it'll be significantly better!

It IS the supercharged/turbocharged one if its 1.4 and 170PS. MK5 is the edition of Golf.

As everyone else says, a potentially very risky purchase! I remember the road tests when new and it offered little economy improvement over the 2.0 TSI GTI when driven enthusiastically, but a big drop off in performance. The equivalent model GT TDI 170 was the one to go for offering similar performance but far better MPG.

So yes, instead go for the MK5 GTI which has "modern classic" written all over it!

Thank you for all the advice and information people have to decided not to go ahead with this Pacific model as so many horror stories about it .

My wife's has been (relatively) trouble free in only needing a timing chain at ~79k miles. It has thus far failed to explode otherwise.

As above, you're probably better off with a GTI.
