Hi guys, apologies for all the golf related queries, I realise they’ve been covered probably 1000s of times on here but I’m new to car. So I have a 7R, contemplating whether to go stage 1 ECUs and dsg mapped seems like revo and apr are the favourites but the car is under VW warranty atm and I’ve only owned a few weeks so not entirely sure how the cars going to behave a few thousand miles down the road. How reliable are these off the shelf maps? Any common probs? Is the difference night and day? Do they come guaranteed (should engine or gearbox fail) how does the jb4 compare? Could the dsg cope with the extra load? Seems jb4 is plug and play which I like as it won’t void my dealer warranty. Where is everyone getting there work done, I’m in the west London area, so far I’ve emailed vrs northamption and nvm in the midlands, would I be okay with either of these guys? There’s also mrc which I’m hoping to contact too. Any other recommendations abit closer to home? There’s wrench studios which is close to me but I’m not sure if they do it.

Many thanks

Been quoted by vrs an apr stage 1 map ecu and tcu for 1426 inc vat, they don’t get involved in jb4s. This seems abit high?
Nvm quoted me jb4 installed and fitted for 495 with dyno, or stage 1 ecu and dsg map for 790, why the big price diff between the two garages?

Thanks

Also whilst it’s in my head (talking to myself here haha) if I went ahead with a jb4 say, and later on wanted to stage , could you pair the two up if that makes sense? Ie stage 1 ecu and dsg map with a jb4 added? Would it exceed the 370 odd power?

You can't combine the tuning box with a proper remap.

Can't comment on the difference in cost - have you asked the mapping companies?

I'l take a stab at this, the JB4 - or Burger motorsport piggy back is an additional ecu fitted that overrides that factory one. It has a default set up and can be customised by a someone who has the appropriate software.

Your view is because it is a plug in device you can get the claimed 50 odd HP gain and if anything goes wrong with the car remove it/send it to the dealer and have a clear conscious. There is a slight issue with that in, the factory ECU is still highly likely to have logged the increased boost levels at the very least. If you are genuinely worried about your car during it's warranty period then a JB4 or a custom /off the shelf remap from the likes of CustomCode/Revo/APR/MRC an so on might not be for you.

However, ask your VW dealer about Mountune ECU upgrades . I haven't seen anything to guarantee this yet but based on the fact that FORD WILL honour the warranty on Mountune equipped cars it would seem a fair presumption that VW will to.

I think I read somewhere (might have even been PH) that the new Mountune tunes for VW won't be warranty freindly (like the Ford link which is also coming to an end), as people were saying they would not sell very well as so much more expensive than the usual Revo, APR etc which are obviously also not warranty friendly either, therefore no real selling point to the Mountune.
