I need your help please.

My father in law has a 2011 Audi A4 2.0TFSI - does this car have a cam belt or timing chain? If it is the belt, when does it need to be replaced?
The car has 90k miles - so i guess it does need to be changed already, or very soon.

Any help appreciated.

Timing chain. And I’d be looking to get it replaced along with the tensioner as soon as possible to be fair.
TFSI engines of that era especially the 1.8 and 2.0 had issues with the tensioner. I believe VW/Audi ended up making several revisions. You would be looking at around £800-900 for the job in total I reckon.

Ok, thanks. What is the reccomended interval for replacement/service on the timing chain?

There isn't one - it's a "non-service" item. However, there have been a few revisions because the earlier ones shat themselves.

To replace just the tensioner is't about £400. It's a 10 minute job to check if you have the latest tensioner, however.

Just found out my Octavia vRS has the old style tensioner last week, booked in straight away for this Wednesday for the remedial work, it just isn't worth not doing!
My car only has 26k so just replacing the tensioner and the timing case because it's sure to bend when taking it off. Parts were just over a hundred quid (genuine) and a couple hours labour tops.

Blue shows where it should be, red is actual. This is going to be more than a £100 in parts ...
