I'm looking at a 2013 Passat with Sat Nav.

Are the updates a VW only purchase? I'm new to it so not sure on the ins and outs. Any potentially dodgy ways of obtaining them?

you would need to find out what model it is I used to be able to update the RNS310, the RNS510 was also updatable.

I've been looking around for map updates for my mate's recent Ford, as the dealer wants around £250 for them. For that, they seem to appear on eBay in various forms at fairly reasonable prices. There is a download version that I've seen, but it's around 36Gb so my mobile broadband wouldn't be suitable.

What surprised me is that, when it was released, the map update that he has now was using map data that was already eighteen months out of date. So in theory, when they get around to releasing a new one for his unit, it's going to be based on data from the beginning on 2018. I really wouldn't consider paying dealer price for something that's so out of date on the day of release.

I bought a new Giulietta last July. The map version was dated 2017, but I am aware of errors from about 5-years ago.

I suspect that car companies are only really interested in you paying £250 for map updates. The fact that you could buy a Garmin or TomTom for much less than that with lifetime map updates does not seem to worry them on iota.

I think the only system worth having is something with Apple / Android Car Play so that you can the use Google Maps, or Waze.

Imagine just how good these folk are going to be with autonomous vehicles, where real-time map updates will be required. Not being aware that a street has recently been made one-way could have devastating consequences.

I don’t think things bet much better at the quality end of the market, having recently watched a couple with a new Mercedes SUV arguing about how to enter a space with their twiddly knob input device.

For the older system there's a little bit of playing around (ensuring firmware is up to date etc.) but the process for updating is well documented online. Officially you need to purchase the updates from VW.

From 2014 with the switch to Discover/Pro navigation the updates are free from VW.

Given the latter, I wouldn't feel too bad about the former.
