Golf R remap west London area/exhaust options
Discussion
Hi guys any recommendations for a decent place to get my mk7 R stage 1 mapped in the west London area? New to turbo cars and not really gone into mapping etc before, am I correct in saying I need a stage 1 map along with a dsg map? Or would simply getting the software for just a stage 1 do the trick? Ie no dsg map. Claimed figures seems to be gains of 50-70 extra ponies, and a claimed 0-60 time of 3.7 secs is this realistic? Would I be better off getting a plug and play chip tuning box? Also wondering how I could get the car to sound abit meatier without getting a full exhaust system, resonator delete? Would changing tail pipes do anything? Upgraded Air intake? Sorry If previously mentioned, I’m new to this car, not done the whole turbo thing or playing around with maps and exhausts before, been in n/a BMW’s most my life, many thanks
It's generally advisable to have gearbox software altered to suit an engine map on DSG cars. There are agents around for Revo, APR, and plenty of others.
Tuning boxes? Never been convinced. When making stuff go faster you can only ever pick two of these three:
Cheap
Powerful
Reliable
Resonator delete introduces drone (this is what resonators get rid of) and sound slightly broken to my ear. They're popular because they're a very cheap way of making the car louder. For some people 'loud' is good enough.
Induction kit (depending on type) will give you a marginal increase in induction and turbo noise.

If it's a mk7 with the 6 speed box then R tech are very good and reasonably priced (been around the TFSI scene for years and now tuning the ea888).
Off the shelf maps such as APR and Revo are good but are also big bucks.
I have a JB4 unit and the car is as quick as most stage 1 cars, the benefit of this is I can sell the unit when I am don't with the car and can also adjust the map setting and data log the car.
Whist the TCU update is certainly worthwhile (DSG mapping) it's not essential if you want to save costs, the benefits are greater clamping pressure and allowing you to hold gears in manual mode without automatically shifting up at redline.
