High Mileage Audi Diesels
Discussion
Good morning Chaps and Chappettes,
Very new to PH, so i appreciate your patience .
I'm thinking of getting an 2.0 TDI Audi A4 Avant Diesel 2008 - 2012 shape / age. i've got a budget of about £6k an a 2007 1.4tsi 160BHP Golf as my collateral .. ok i'll cut to the chase.
Most of the Car's i have found have about 120k+ mileage, what are these engines good for mileage wise and what are the key things to look out for ? i saw a similar post about the V6 engines but not a lot about the 2.0 TDI engines.
obviously if the car has been looked after it should be ok, but what are the common wear and tear parts that go on a car that has done this sort of mileage?
Any and all help would be great
Cheers

Engines are fine...
I have a 2010 plate A4, 170hp 2.0Tdi, currently on 160k miles. Owned since 75k miles.
Its had....
New wheel bearings all round
New shocks and dampers all round
Headlight self levelling thing snapped - new sensor needed
New thermostat
Weird electrical issue whereby the car wouldn't start - traced to a lose wire but did take a long time to find
Exhaust bracket broke - £20 repair at local garage
Cam belt and water pump at 70k and 140k.
From memory that's about it. Still on its original clutch.
In terms of what to look for? Usual stuff, service history, etc. If its been used properly and had enough long runs for the DPF to do its thing there aren't many Achilles heels on them. At the age you're looking at paintwork might be showing signs of stone chips, which could lead to rusting if not properly sorted. There is a general feeling that the emissions recall is not something you need doing - off the record comment from an Audi tech to me was not to do it.
Check the oil service intervals. The official long life intervals are 18,000 miles, but a shorter interval would probably be better on a higher mileage car. I change oils every 9,000 miles now, and then it gets a proper service every 18,000 as per the Audi service intervals. At 120k if the car was still on long life intervals it wouldn't put me off, but just something to consider.

I assume you'll get a CR diesel at that age? When was the PD > CR changeover?
The CR engine is the one that's subject of the emissions scandal and recall. I'd advise finding out if it's had the 'fix' and when.
Lots of internet stories of happy engines getting the fix and then throwing up EGR faults combined with worse economy and drivability than before.

I own a 2010 A4 Avant 3.0TDi Quattro with 100k on the clock, and it still feels really tight, with no squeaks, rattles or interior wear. It still looks blooming good too! asked around before buying and the general feedback was that they are good for 200k, which I can easily believe. I’m not sure how the 2.0 lump stacks up, but I would say go for it. Just get one that has been looked after, with lots of supporting invoices.
Good luck!
Good luck!

They're all CR engines in the B8 model i think. But you're right regarding the recall, the long term feedback isnt great. The CR engine is the one that's subject of the emissions scandal and recall. I'd advise finding out if it's had the 'fix' and when.

Mine is Auto. If you go Auto of this period you want to go for Quattro as it came with the Tiptronic gearbox, which is strong, compared to the multitronic which came in the FWD variant- and has proven weak. Just google it! My car is also for sale on AT as we have recently purchased a Q7. I have a serious Audi problem!
Was interested to read this post - I've a bit of a dilema with my 2010 A4 B8 TDI, with 170,000 on the clock (which is also remapped from when just outside 3 year warranty). It's still on the original clutch after a lot of commuting motorway miles, which needs replacing now, as well as due its second cambelt and waterpump replacement, which will come to around £2400 with an independent VW/Audi specalist, which is probably more than I could sell the car for right now second hand... the garage also said it might need a new turbo as some oil leakage (approx 900), also the gear change is really stiff into first/second but that might be clutch relate? Any thoughts on whether worth keeping for a few more years, or moving on? It's been reliable so far, and understand these are just routine maintenance kind of things (assuming the gear change is clutch related or linkage)..... full service history.
