MK5 Golf Front Side Lamp Bulb Change

How on earth do you get fingers in to on the Nearside front lamp access to change the side lamp bulb?? Do people have super strong fingers?

Seem to remember this type of pliers helped. I might have used masking tape on the pliers to minimise scratching as well.
