B8 A4 3.2 FSi Quattro - Wobble/Vibration - what could it be?
Discussion
Hi All,
Recenlty bought a 1 owner relatively low mile 2008 (58) B8 A4.
This is the Quattro model with the 3.2 fsi engine and it is just about to tick over to 82k.
Full service history. Everything main dealer or approved.
I live in the Midlands nad bought the car from kent - and as such you'd think i got a pretty good motorway run on the way back. However, due to traffic and speed restrictions, getting anywhere near over 70mph was difficult but when i did, i noted a slight wobble/vibration from the wheel.
Since owning it (march 1st). I have only been using round town and commuting so never over 40mph.
So with bank holiday looming and 2 trips away in mind. I had the wheels balanced and was told that the wheels at the front were quite the way out and the tyres were partially out of shape.
I took it away on bank holiday with us to Wales (6hrs on the motorway) and the car had quite the vibration at 70 mph plus. Though it seemed better/less noticeable when the gearbox was in Sport Mode and not normal drive - not sure if that was a placebo or not.
So on returning before the 2nd trip i had the tyres replaced as well.
Took it to newquay and got an hour down the M5 and the vibration was now from 50mph plus and seemingly was worse and it not only through the steering wheel it could be felt through my seat and the wife in the passenger seat, even the kids in the back - the whole car seemed to shake quite badly.
I dropped the kids and wife off at the services and decided to drive it back home to pick up the other car - as i was alone i drove a bit harder to save some time and again, in sport, it didn't seem to virbate/shake/wobble quite so bad - definitely still evident and quite harsh but still not as bad.
If its not down to tyres (new) 225/50r17 (same size but new make/model of tyre). And the wheels have been balanced and now the whole car seems to vibrate/shake and wobble at speeds in excess of 56mph. I'm left wondering what it can be?
I have it booked in at Audi locally in Erdington as its the only Audi place i know. I'm worried that because it seems less violent in sport than in drive that this could be a load issue and therefore down to the transfer box or torque converter in the gearbox? I've also been told the tiptronic box isn't serviceable. It doesn't feel like its brake related as discs aren't hot and seem to be evenly worn. That leaves wheels? Driveshafts? Axles?
Anyone else had similar woes and what did they end up being? I'm worried this could be a hefty bill in the offing so soon after sinking all my money into the car. Not what any new owners want but i'd rather be prepared for the worse than expect the best.
Any comments really appreciated
