New EV TT, true 4 seater, HP, AWD
Discussion
If it hasnt been done already, with the Forum's permission I would like to launch a 'New EV TT' Thread to speculate and indeed contribute to the specification of such a potential new car.
The TT has a global recognition for being a compact, stylish, affordable 4wd. - Arguably, evolving from more of a fashion icon (productionised styling prototype) to the latest, unarguably accredited hiperformace 4WD stylish but still compromised, coupe.
Compromised? - Ok lets start with that (add your own dislikes):
Price / performance becomes too esoteric at the upper levels - RS performance can be had for much less
Rear seats are literally a waste of space...ahem...so is the engine bay
Could be a lot lighter and nimble
Could be a lot more economical (tuned RS)
Could do without the residual levels of understeer in extrtemis
Could..do without: Engine, gearbox, transfer box, clutch, differentials, exhaust system, most / all heat exchangers, alternator, fuel tank and fluids weight - thats a good start..
Why be so slow accelerating? - Achieving say 500 lb ft by IC guzzles fuel and costs a fortune in tuning
Why settle for an engine note you dont get excited over (RS, not so much!) when you could have any
Why lug around huge incredibly heavy chunks of metal and then put them in the most stupid of locations?! - Hundreds of pounds in front of and above front axle line! - Sprung axle weight! - You would be pushed to find worse places to put among the heaviest, certainly by density car components if you tried...for a very long time!
Could do with much sharper turn in (adjustable)
A tunable power oversteer, with very capable adj smooth recovery
Could do with 4 usable seats and a little more storage without folding the now usable seats
Could do without visiting a garage or filling station quite so expensively
So, in brief, what could an EV TT(or similar achieve / add what you would realistically like to have):
I would love a MK3->4 with equiv of Elon's Model 3 twin motor underpinnings + enhanced FW +SW
The next evolution of this Tesla powertrain will offer huge lbft/$/lb/mile - It could help the TT / similar also to:
Re-balance the weight distribution front to back to absolute optimum (within and below front and rear axle lines
Drop COG by probably well over 30% when measured against the axle line, reducing body roll due to powertrain being below axle centres
Offer infinite power distribution control via onboard ECU / sensors (Flash updatable via Net)
More than enough, unlockable OE performance (no more aftermarket £4,000 Stg 2 upgrades)
90% reduction in running costs
Whisper quiet cruising + optional enhanced current SOB (sound on board) engine sound character of choosing (Flash changeable)
Autonomous relaxed Cruise option
More interior space - no trans tunnels + bulkheads could be moved (motors the size of melons) to provide full 4 seater comfort and hugely increased storage space
Etc etc
Think of the handling benefits with all powertrain weight below floor and within axle centres! - That, is just the start...imagine being able to instantly and infinitesimally be able to change the power split at each corner - crude example would be the reversing of inner wheel slip to outer wheel overdrive, varying front to back as the corner evolves under the wheels.
Max re-gen toward front wheels under hard braking (allowing for lighter unsprung loads, by use of smaller ultra light cheaper carbon / similar discs that only bear a fraction of normal brake load))
Followed by Initial turn in - scrub wide in TT fashion? - not any more - ECU, using yaw and G sensors will proportionately apply outer wheel power / inner wheel regen / conventional braking to match throttle input / trail braking by driver resulting in as sharp a turn in as you desire (all driver programmable within certain fixed interactive OE limits)
Mid to exit - power oversteer? - Naturally, how much would you like? (just set it up) - The ECU will be there to gather up virtually any over driving (unless Race Mode is selected) - Under most circumstances, you could, if you wanted to, select your max angle of rear drift bias (inner front wheel can be given bigger torque share to pull tail back in line (all infinitely progressive, way beyond most driver perception)
Imagine this technology attacking a series of tight counter-winding, slalom style turns - Sure 2G would be possible, given appropriate contact medium (2G left, followed by 2G right within couple of seconds should be exciting enough for the road)
Acceleration - basically, within reason, just name what you want (Elon's first sedan production attempt shoves well over 2 tons to 60 in less than 3 sec) - Imagine a 1000kg TT with sprint final drive ratios and next gen hardware, SW and Lion batteries - I am sure a hundred mph not kph could be achieved in not much longer - ie quicker than any reasonable person can demand -- Set more sensible goals, say 100mph in 6 secs, VNE 120mph + range of 300 miles with SCharg energy replacement within 30 mins @ price of $39000 --- next year? - Certainly in theory, no probs
I am convinced main manufacturers will be offering this type of sportscar and competing under £40000 within 2 yrs - Elon and or a couple of mavericks may well achieve the above $39000 spec in similar or less time
Apologies for the mixture of terms and measuring units - typed in haste - Please feel free to express what you would like changed / improved in an EV TT package
