2001 Passat thermal Sunroof

My Dad has just bought a 2001 passat estate. I'm pretty sure it's fitted with the fancy 'Keeps your car cool' sunroof, in that the outsife is glass and appears to have little solar gadgies in it and the inside is covered in headlining material.

Does anyone kknow how these work?

It provides a trickle charge to the aircon so it can blow cool air around the car when its parked without flattening the battery. Quite neat - not as much use in the UK as Europe sadly.
