I just read an article in evo about the new A1, and it mentioned there was no news of an S1. They also said that due to the suspension set up at the rear, 4wd wasn’t an option.

Does anyone know if an S1 is coming or not?

This with 250bhp, AWD, 5 doors (got a baby to get in) and modern small car fuel economy could be right up my street!

I hope there is an S1 model.. Reading the initial reviews, it is a slightly bigger car.

Anybody who thinks Audi would design a car without the ability to have 4wd shouldn’t be writing articles for Evo. They just fit torsion beam suspension on the cheapo models and a completely different independent setup on the quattros.

can't see this being 'much' cheaper than the well established S3?

more space and an extra 60bhp ?

Was reading about the 200bhp ("40"?) version the other day - reviews weren't great for a small car that starts at 25k. That's damn near golf gti money...for a rattley little thing. An S1 will have to be pushing 30k.

Except it’s not little anymore, it’s virtually the same size as a mk1 A3 which was a Golf in a party frock.

Read somewhere (i'll find it in a minute) - there's not going to be an S1 version.

from memory, the info from Audi was that it was too complicated to engineer on this platform.

"Audi says there’ll be no S1 hot hatch variant this time, citing cost of development – the last generation ditched its torsion beam rear suspension for a multi-link set-up in order to work with quattro, but, while expensive and a time-consuming faff to engineer, it did turn a profit."

The '40 TFSI' will probably be the closest we'll get for now. It's the same engine as the Polo GTI so should delivery pretty strong performance.

I got an early preview of the new A1 yesterday ahead of today's launch, it's a nice car for sure. Looks a lot more grown up than before and the interior seems pretty high tech. For now it's only available with the 1.0 TFSI (30 TFSI) with the 1.5 and 2.0 versions following next year.

Will it be worth it, though? Over the last few days, there have been several reviews of the regular car that are hardly glowing. Got to build on those foundations...

Well, it's still 6 inches shorter than a 20 year old A3, but yes, it's almost as big as a mk1 A3. It's also rattley, quite "plasticy" inside, and (IMO) little! A current A3 is a foot longer and a fair bit wider than a mk1 A3 was, so in todays money, the A1 is small.

Don't get me wrong, I looked at polo GTI for the wife (she had an Ibiza FR for a 5 years) - this car has a market, but the A1 is really expensive.

Saw a new A1 at the weekend, it is a lot bigger.

The interior was pretty nice, the one I saw was a 1.0 Auto S-Line with virtual cockpit. Nice bit of kit, but at £25k+ you'd expect it.

I don't understand all the fuss.

If you want an S1, just buy one? The old one looks better than the new A1 anyway?

They're totally different cars mechanically, they've changed it significantly under the skin. Yes the looks are evolutionary rather than revolutionary but they're pretty easy to tell apart side by side. Old one feels very dated now, I had an 18-plate the other day and thought it's actually worse than a new Ibiza I had earlier in the year.

No S1 is the rumour that I heard too. Quality seems down on the A1 as well, hope that doesn't filter through to all new models.

Shame, the old version was an excellent car, albeit expensive.

Perhaps they will do an RS1 instead!

Yep, my Audi contact suggested no S1, due to the expensive development costs and potential low volume..which provided a perfect opportunity for me to buy a used one over the weekend and trade in the old A1 smile

Nogaro blue with all the extras.. proper little all weather weapon!

It depends what you are used to!

It’s not particularly cosseting but neither is it ridiculously stiff.

Well I found a Golf R on standard suspension too stiff - so this probably will be too!
