Lately the front and rear driver's side footwells of my car (2006 5 door, no sunroof) have been soaking wet but I'm struggling to see where the leak is coming from. There's nothing obvious around the door seals but I have read that the drain holes are a common problem. Having looked under the scuttle panel the hole (to the bottom right of this picture) is clear, but the way it is shaped makes it look as if there might be one towards the back (bottom left of the picture)? Has anyone else ever had a similar problem?

Did you resolve this? I have an identical car UK 2005/55-plate Golf, 5-door, no sunroof.

The driver's footwell and passenger footwell behind driver were both soaked. I removed the driver's seat and used a wet vax to suck up about 3 litres and then realised I would have to cut out the carpet to get the sound deadening properly dry.

The scuttle drain did have some composted leaves but was certainly not blocked. I removed the wheel arch liner to verify.

The aircon condensate drain tube appeared to be watertight and was not obviously blocked.

The cabin air intake is on the passenger side and that side is bone dry and the cabin filter is clean and dry so I can rule that out.

Lower door seals? Seems a bit unlikely since there are two layers of rubber seal...

I think I will pour colour-dyed water on the windscreen and observe unless anyone has any better ideas? Thanks.

No idea why my pic is being flipped 90 degrees.

Yes I did, there was some sort of plastic ECU(?) cover below the scuttle that had cracked and was allowing all the water in. I no longer have the car and got a garage to do it, but it was in the centre of the car and they didn't have to remove the dash or anything major to rectify it. Hope that helps.

I once saw on Wheeler Dealers they use a smoke machine on the inside of the car, and waited to see where it exited the car. If the smoke can get out, water can get in.

I was sceptical until I used it on one of my cars to find why my floor carpet was drenched.

I seem to recall hearing about Golf pollen filter blockage causing water to leak in to the cabin but maybe on the passenger side?

Not VW but my Son's Clio was misfiring and throwing up cylinder 4 misfire error codes, turns out the spark plug hole was filling with water due to a blockage on the scuttle drains (leaves) causing water to run onto the engine, it then evaporates due to heat all except that which gets down the plug holes...

Thread revival.

I have a very similar issue on the same car, both drivers side front and rear carpets are wet.

I've cleaned out under the scuttle (removed wipers and plastic, cleared out the few leaves etc that were in there and blasted with a hose pipe too, no blockages there. I then extracted a good few litres of water and thought job done.

Over the next few days we had some decent rainfall, the carpet remained dry - it's important to note that I hadn't drive the car since the extraction but was checking for moisture daily after rain.

Today I drove the car on wet roads (rain and fog) and checked the carpets, they were wet again. I think I demisted using the AC so that's the next thing I want to check, but no idea where the AC condense pipe is.

The top of my rubber mat (winter mats) underside was wet, leading me to believe the water is coming up from behind the dash somewhere.

I'll also need to check the OPs fix, I'm guessing I can see this plastic by removing the scuttle again.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Does it have those silly metal inner door panels with a seal that can fail along the bottom, especially if it's been removed before?
Just guessing really, door rubbers are also a bit crap on these.
