Hi

Bought my first used car yesterday, a VW 2011 1.2 petrol polo. It drives beautifully but I’ve noticed it irregularly judders in neutral when sat in traffic, and also stationary with the clutch engaged in first. I didn’t notice it on the test drive as had an easy run of traffic lights etc.

I’ve had a look online and looks like it could be a problem with the cylinders? Can anyone explain this to a complete novice?

I have a 12 month warranty from the dealer I bought it from but it’s a Peugeot garage so I’m thinking of taking it to a local Indy VW specialist to get checked out but is this something the warranty should cover?

I’m new to all this so go easy please! Just looking for sensible advice. Cheers.

It's a 3 cylinder engine, so it doesn't have the smoothest idle. If my memory serves me right my Dad's old one was the same.

If it concerns you, raise the issue with the dealer you bought it from and have them check it.

My Son has a 1.2 Polo, I bought it cheap as it had broken down.

The fault was an ignition coil that had failed and blown the fuse for the engine management. A new coil cost £30 and it was then fine but about a year later the same coil failed again, this time it didn't blow the fuse but was not firing on that cylinder and running really rough.

It is possible a coil is failing but only intermittentely, causing it to misfire only occasionally and so run rough just some of the time.

My Audi S4 had such a problem, it developed a misfire that would only show under load at high RPM, for which the ECU would shut down the cylinder until the engine was 'reset' (stopped/restarted), again cost £30 for a new coil and my other Son has a Renault Clio that has had at least 3 coils fail over it's lifetime.

It could also be something else but coils can be troublesome on many vehicles (don't know if VW are any worse than others?).

The best way to check is to get it scanned by VCDS or similar (engine monitoring software) as the vehicle will (should?) store an error code - e.g. my S4 told me that cylinder no. 5 had recorded intermittent misfires and cylinder shutdown so it was very easy to diagnose.

Most decent garages should have such software, alternatively there are people on here that do and maybe willing to help.
