So it appears that my brake discs and pads need replacing on my Golf.

Should I go to the dealer and have the VW ones fitted (for many ££££) or go yo my local independent. He says he will fit whatever brand / type that I want (as long as it fits the car)

Are there any recommendations for replacements?

Pagid are a good alternative. Can be sourced from Euro Spares.

Delphi or Bosch both are OEM same as many of the parts Euros offer.

Depends where you are and how much your trust your local that they won’t buy cheap but still charge the dosh

I trust the independent as they have been used for many years.

It's just that he is willing to fit what I ask him to!

Are the Bosch ones, as an example, better than the VW ones. I tend to 'brake' heavy!

How much is the indie's fully fitted price, inc VAT?

I can't remember the make our indie used but it was a name I recognised and he said he always used them so was happy to go along with it. Hard to work out the price as they were done all round, with an MOT and a major service but without plugs. Total bill was just under £600 so I reckon a bit under £200 for each axle, so not massively cheaper than the VW fixed price.

The original VW ones had lasted 60K / 6yrs so can't complain about that.

VW main dealers have a good fixed price for fitted brakes. If you have trade contacts their TPS trade prices for gen parts are very reasonable. They even do a cheaper range for older cars.

Do the VW dealers still do 'brakes for life' - they used to but I can't see any reference to that on the website now.

Just buy the cheapest Discs from Euros and some decent pads.

Nope. I think they fell victim to the 'all you can eat' types, who literally did eat all they could!

This.

Its a road going VW golf, hardly needs anything OTT. Anything on the market from Euro Car Parts will do just fine.

Pagid pads are a bit rubbish as they tend to squeak. They will work ok but are often noisy.

Managed 50k out of a set of mtec discs with very aggressive track pads....
Honestly most discs are the same ste just buy the cheapest ones going and whatever OEM-type pads are about and fresh fluid.

Really anything more is wasting money.

Ok, I guess we can have different experiences.

I have owned VAGs for over 10 years and would like to think I'm pretty knowledgeable about them smile
