C7 RS6 Buying Advice
Discussion
Hello chaps,
I'm looking to get myself into one of these in the next 3 months all being well so wanted to tap into the collective wisdom of PH.
There's not much information around in terms of buying guides so it would be helpful to know what I should be looking for - my budget is £50k give or take a couple of grand.
I for sure want the pan sunroof
I also want 20" wheels which are forged items as I hear the 21st are cast and are prone to cracking and buckling?
Sport exhaust i assume is a must?
Is the Dynamic Pack worth seeking out over the standard set up? Dynamic Pack+ seems not to have been specced by many people?
What else should I be looking for in the spec?
What potential issues or pitfalls should I be cognisant of when viewing cars? They seem to be mostly very reliable - but obviously most aren't very old yet (i plan on keeping the car for a good few years)
Thanks fellas - over to you!

rs246.com for you chum.I'm looking to get myself into one of these in the next 3 months all being well so wanted to tap into the collective wisdom of PH.

Reliability so far has been excellent, the quality on these is certainly right up there.
Front brakes are expensive and seem to last something like 30k miles. They can also warp if used badly.
The 21s can buckle but rarely severely, I sell a lot of these and haven't had a single wheel that couldn't be repaired. On most occasions the buckles aren't severe enough to induce a vibration but are enough to require repair before diamond-cutting. The 21s are considerably more desirable in terms of saleability.
Dynamic pack plus basically gave you ceramics, very few people went for this. Expect to pay a premium if you did find a good car equipped so.
A tiny number of cars have seen a water hose work loose and rub through - it's a simple case of moving a clip. There's a thread on this with photos on 246.
I personally prefer the air suspension to DRC (DRC is included in dynamic pack). Suits the car better and body control remains very good. DRC can introduce some harshness.
I love black styling pack, to my eye most colours work better with it.
Sport exhaust for me is a no-brainer, it's a great sounding thing.
Cameras are useful (big old bus).
Sunroof is hugely desirable and makes for an even nicer interior (speaking of which black leather is the most desirable, Audi buyers aren't generally very adventurous here).
There's three pieces of stone chip film on the front of each rear arch, these can yellow, are prone to peely edges, are ~£100 each to replace, and are an utter sod to apply neatly.
They're quite sensitive to wheel alignment. I think the huge, heavy wheels make it easy for this to be knocked out slightly.
Anything else ask away - numerous owners around here. I've driven probably ~40 different ones so have played with most specifications.

Do it, you will not regret.
Just sold mine after 4 years of great fun. Decide try a bit of pork for a while before probably going back to the next gen RS6 once released.
The RS6 C7 is an absolute monster and a perfect family car.
As already said above, the air suspension is far superior to my mind and offers just the right balance between ability to really push the car on and comfort when cruising. I had the 21" wheels and no issues to report but I know other were less lucky.
Reliability wise it was perfect and only saw the garage for service and MOT. Got away with one set of tires which Audi price matched to an online supplier and avoided the brake pad / disc change out which was going to come due fairly soon so running costs were minimized. Yes, all the local petrol stations knew me very well but if you are looking at smiles per gallon it does not matter.
Rear camera was probably the only spec I would add for sure next time but even without visibility is pretty damn good.
Hope you find one you like as they are great fun.

Thanks both - really helpful.
Interesting observation on the 21's DrG, the vast majority of the cars seem to have them specced but to read on RS246 it comes over that they are all made of chocolate so good to know that it's not as bad as i had feared - people talking about having shelled out £5k to replace them all which I wouldn't be too keen on..
I'm also led to understand that buying a post facelift car (2015+ I think) is a better proposition than the pre-facelifts, even if they cost more for higher mileage?
I also understand that the facelift models had double glazed front windows to get rid of wind noise - what else was updated or changed at the time?
Obviously the running costs of one of these beasts is considerable but I'm going into it with my eyes open - I read that brakes are very expensive - how much is a set of front discs and pads?
I also assuming i'm best with sticking with the Audi network for servicing for the sake of history - service intervals are 20K? What are the ballpark servicing costs?
RS6 is something i've lusted over since the C5 so its something of a dream motor for me. Plus 3 kids, a dog and weekends spent fishing and mountain biking there really isn't anything to touch it...

Not a vast increase in equipment on facelift cars as RS6s were well kitted anyway but the newer LED headlamps (previously optional of the older design) are nice. The facelifted car does looks appreciably newer.
Running costs are fairly sensible for the amount of performance on offer, as I say, the quality is pretty good so expenditure is generally limited to maintenance rather than repair.
Front discs/pads ~£1400 from memory.
Plenty of well regarded specialists around if you don't wish to use the main dealer network. Walk into a franchise dealer with an 'RS' key, walk out with a sore bum...
Oil every 10, service every 20. If you ask me leaving oil changes that long in any car is a bit silly but in a performance vehicle more so.

Dr G - this one caught my eye - perfect spec apart from an apparent lack of sunroof.

However what's the deal with the gear lever - no RS6 I've seen has that one. Swapped out 'box maybe?

That does look weird and I have never seen that on a C7.https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Seen it before on another one, might be something to do with the steering wheel option, which is missing the flat bottom version.https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

If your budget will stretch then go for the PE, it has quite a bit more kit including the exhaust as standard. I have the DRC but not the dynamic steering, hated it on my RS4 and believe the RS6 is no better, quite liked the air car I tested but it did roll more than the DRC. Mine is just 12 months old and have had no problems save for kerning the offing alloys a couple of weeks ago, even though I have the surround camera (which I highly recommend if you can find a car equipped with one).
It's a great all rounder, probably the best every day car I have owned, good luck.

I'm looking to buy one in the next 3 weeks so I'm starting to take a closer look at what's available.
There are a couple up for sale that have the Dynamic Pack + with the Carbon Ceramic brakes.
Whats the operating life like on these in terms of discs and pads? I assume they are very long lived, but the replacement costs are eye watering given they were a £9,000 option.
Thanks.

Cracks, chips, and mishandling are more likely to finish them off than wear. We've never replaced a worn set but have seen a few done under warranty for excessive cracks.
Discs are ~2.5k+vat each and pads expensive too. They need to be fitted with great care. Drop one or clonk it with a tool and you're in for a bad day. Audi have multiple documents detailing what is and is not acceptable marking/cracking/damage as nobody wants to pay for those unless they absolutely have to.
