B9 S4 pre-sense = bloody dangerous
Discussion
Anyone know how to disable this permanently? I've manually turned it off twice via MMI, on each occasion after a heart stopping moment when the car has randomly decided to jam the brakes on.
Is there some kind of automatic system reset that takes place on a periodic basis that causes the pre-sense to re-arm itself? It's a wonder I haven't heard of Audis being rear-ended due to this electronic brainfart.

Are you sure the sensor is clean on the window? I have a b9 a4 (albeit not a s4) and it’s saved me several times already.
However It does annoy me when you approach a tight bend and identifies a car or pedestrians in front of you. It occasionally flashes on the dash and pre tenses the seat belts even though I have every intention of negotiating the bend.
I don’t know if you can disable it fully without using some software.
I know that hasn’t helped. I guess I’m trying to say that mine has never gone off for no reason so your sensor could be dirty

Mine is a little frustrating but it never 'goes off' for no reason. It did kick in once when I approached a 90 deg L/H bend and a cyclist came around in the opposite direction, but it will be set to legislate for the lower end of driving ability and inattention.
As for switching off permanently, I doubt that will be possible. We have to think of saving all the kittens in the trees...

Interesting.
Yes, the screen is clean, although there were some rain drops I guess so that might have confused the sensor.
I can't remember the specific circumstances the first time a couple of months ago (other than the shock of a computer taking over my vehicle), but the most recent was on the approach to a speed hump (table top which can be negotiated at around 25mph). The car obviously decided it knew better. It only momentarily jammed the brakes, so I guess that's some small mercy as I had someone following close behind.

Could be an issue with the sensitivity of the sensor, as its a B9 S4 I imagine it is still under warranty. I would take it to Audi to get the sensors tested, there could even be a recall or technical bulletin regarding the sensitivity of the pre-sense systems. Believe that Audi have only recently adopted the system so they may be ironing out the issues with the sensors.

There seems to be a 3 step process on theseYes, the screen is clean, although there were some rain drops I guess so that might have confused the sensor.

1) visual alarm on the dash and an audio alarm/bomg
2) A short sharp brake automatically to get you to wake up
3) If you've done nothing about step 2 it stops for you
Ive had the car actually stop twice and being a manual the car stops, and then lurches forward as it stalls. I have had plenty of alarms on the dash (mainly when Im behind a cyclist that drifts into the middle of the road or a car Im following in the city turns left. I've also has several short sharp auto braking. I get it often when I arrive at work and drive through the barrier that has to be raised using my security pass through the window. The car will brake suddenly as it thinks im going to drive into the barrier even though my window is no where near the security check.

Thanks, yes that makes sense, although my car didn't stop as per step 3: if I remember correctly, my foot may have been lightly brushing the brake on the approach to the table top, and I released it when the auto-brake kicked in. I'm guessing if I continued to press the brake pedal at step 2, perhaps it might have auto-braked with maximum force. Who knows. I shudder at the thought. Your description of the car auto-braking by the barrier would drive me mad.1) visual alarm on the dash and an audio alarm/bomg

I hate electronic nannying, but there seems to be no getting away from it in modern cars.
Cheesed off with it, I went onto the menu today to attempt a "late" or delete and it doesn't have an option. I'm a cheapskate so it's a 1.4 Tsi 150, the entry model. I'm wondering if the option is not available on this model. The menu simply offered "turned on" and the turn-off said "option not available".
I had a lock-up the other day when there was a good 3/4 cars length gap before the vehicle in front. It's reacted just to someone walking a dog coming towards me, and even once when I was driving on an empty road and passed under overhanging trees. PITA doesn't come into it. I would acknowledge if it was poor driving on my part.

Not familiar with B9 models but if there's an option for it in the menu then it can probably be enabled using VCDS or (if available) from the engineering 'green' screen? As an example, on B8 models you can activate certain previously hidden options into the MMI menu, such as 'driving lights' which once in the menu can be be switched off but it maybe that so-called safety options are not selectable?
And then you have the same tech on the Arteon which doesn't work, according to the Top Gear feature a few weeks ago. They never explained why which bugs me...
Also I've noticed on a lot of newer Mercedes, that the "blind spot" warning light in the wing mirrors lights on every time I overtake them or even when stationary alongside them at traffic lights. Would drive me nuts!

I had another occasion in addition to the two I posted above. Exiting a roundabout, nothing in front for miles. Full on emergency stop, zero warning. Luckily at low speed.
When my lease is up, I'll be glad to move on into something with less tech.
Unfortunately(fortunately?) all new cars have/will soon have auto braking systems fitted. When my lease is up, I'll be glad to move on into something with less tech.

It seems the Germans have trouble getting their implementation of this kind of tech right, i see lots of complaints about keyless entry/auto braking/adaptive cruise etc on the German brands but not so much from the Japanese etc.
I had Auto Braking on a Nissan and cant think of a single time it activated unexpectedly.

A straight on a motorway close to me at a higher than normal speed and it activated. It is pretty scary when there is no discernible reason for it to activate.
A chap who I work with has had two passat hire cars from work and in each hes had an incident of the auto braking cutting in. Worst was on the motorway when he nearly got rear ended by an artic. He said it was horrendous as he was just a passenger behind the wheel.boy said:

Exactly my experience, early hours of the morning, a speed which I cannot publish and it activated. Not a soul around thankfully but I got a bit of a fright if I am honest. Another couple of times where it has activated I have been a passenger in that I am powerless to do anything. Gassing Station | Audi, Seat, Skoda & VW | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
