Having got rid of the TVP several years ago and looking at replacing my old A4 2.8q family Avant, I thought I’d try a “one size fits all” and deal on a second hand B6 S4 Avant for around £30k.

I have a question on fuel range … I don’t mind paying the mpg price for V8 pleasure, but hate actually visiting petrol stations; how many miles are you getting on average between fill-ups on a 4.2 S4 ?

The book recons a 66 lit tank and claimed 18mpg combined which could be 310 miles; worse than my 450 Chimaera and this would be seriously irritating.

Now the £25k W8 Passat estate which handles like crap has a proper 80 lit tank and recons 450 miles; should I get my pipe and slippers ?

Great question and my thoughts exactly. This is the basic problem with the performance models of mid-sized cars - inadequate range. Anyway, you will get 250-300 miles. BTW the 03MY S4's have 66 litres but the 04MY's are as the B7 and only have 63 litres.

The DIS is very good and allows the range to drop to 10-15 miles quite safely before filling up but don't believe the average mpg - it over-reads.

These are great cars - I've got two!

<off topic> Reminds me of what one of my ex-neighbours used to say about V12 jags that were sold as grand tourers but you couldn't actually do any touring with it as you were forever stopping to fill the thing up with petrol.

<smug> VW TDI 130, 600+ miles between fill ups.

I would agree with the 270-300 miles per tank. It's about what I get with my Oct 03 S4. However, the Lemans trip last year averaged just over 12mpg so it really depends on how you drive! Those pesky Tuscans just wouldn't pull over
Hans, if your still looking for an S4 V8 I think I'll be putting mine on the market after Lemans this year. Its detracting from me finishing the Ultima.
