Engine Fail. Workshop! 1.4 TSI 160
Discussion
Hello
I have owned the 2009 MK6 Golf GT 1.4 TSI 160 for nearly a year now, on the very first night I had it the turbo died... Luckily I had 6 months RAC warranty and it was replaced free of charge for me, since then the car has been pretty good.
All until approximately 1 month ago, when I was randomly driving and all of a sudden the engine light and EPC light flashed with the message "Engine Fail. Workshop", the car went into limp mode. Garage diagnosed it with computer, "random multiple misfire in cylinder 2", he told me he cant guarantee it will fix it but cheapest option to try is new coil pack so he did that, as well as new spark plugs.
After this it was fine for 2 weeks.
Then yesterday, the exact same thing happened again. Took it to the same garage, it was giving the same message, about cylinder 2..... So he swapped the coils around and tried again, and it was still saying cylinder 2, so he said that it cant be the coil then.. and he thinks it is electrical, maybe wiring or the ECU..... told me he doesnt really deal with electrics so he passed me onto something who does, where my car is currently sat, waiting to be seen too.
He has not fully diagnosed it yet but he seems to think it is the ECU, told me if he can repair it then it should be a 2 day job, however if he cannot and it needs a new ECU then it wont be until next week at the earliest.
Just wondering if all of this rings any bells to anyone, I am already contemplating trying to sell it and getting something else, but I wont lie I do like the car... alot.. just at same time, I dont want a car thats going to keep being a PoS to me either.
For record, its now at 90K miles and according to its history as told by a friend who works at VW, it has been a little gem and passed all MOT's, serviced, no problems he said

I just spoke to the garage,
Not quoting these words, I am quite bad at repeating messages especially from quite a lengthy phone call... but from the jist of it from what I remembered, it was something like.......
Fixed a wiring fault that was preventing cylinder 2 from firing up or something.... but now he said cylinder 2 is getting flooded with oil or something????? He hopes that is due to it not being fired up and now that it is, it is pulling alot to it but if not, he is concerned there is an underlying fault... Also on computer is showing that cylinder 2 is quite weak....
He is going to give it me back once hes tested it runs ok which he thinks it is and to see how it goes, but as he mentioned, he thinks there is an underlying fault... something to do with a ring, and if his assumption is right it involves an engine rebuild....
I also told him what you guys mentioned about the cracked pistons, and he said that would make sense and explain the oil....
Sooooo thats kind of where I am at. Might be getting it back soon, not being certain how long it is going to last, until it might potentially need an engine rebuild.... ( Or a new engine = Was told a new engine would be cheaper )
Any further advice? I live in the UK btw

If I got a new engine, as I already have a new turbo, should I be good or would I still be likely to encounter problems?
As long as I avoided the 2009 engine that is, there is one on ebay from a 2012 1.4 golf for £800 and has only done 12k miles
I have no knowledge of your actual issue but would advise caution when buying used engines. As long as I avoided the 2009 engine that is, there is one on ebay from a 2012 1.4 golf for £800 and has only done 12k miles
It`s very easy to make claims about the alleged mileage covered by an engine sat on a pallet at a scrapyard, giving it a nice hair cut will inflate the price considerably.
When I worked in the motor trade we had so many issues with used engines we stopped supplying them for customers and only fitted engines that the customer sourced and supplied and on the explicit understanding that if the engine proved to be a dud, as they often did, that the labour to do it all again was on the customer.
This is the situation im in now, got the car back for starters and its working... though 2 mechanics both suspect it does have an engine fault and will need an engine rebuild/new engine, they have advised me to use it and see how it is, if engine light comes on again take it back and they will know straight away if it does have an engine fault to do, due to cylinder 2 being smothered in oil.
My options are:
1. Keep it, pray they are wrong and that fixing the wiring fault is the one and only miracle fix and live happily ever after with it.
2. Wait and see if it does go again and then either
a. Sell it
b. Pay for new engine/rebuild
3. Sell it now asap
People that are pushing me to sell it now due to telling me that 90,000 miles on a 1.4 TSI is already near its life span, 90k is when problems are due and 110k is about the max I would and should get from a 1.4 TSI anyway. Is this true? I was told by another garage that I will easily get 160k from this engine?

I would get rid of it now, unfortunately they are very unreliable especially the early versions like yours. Throw it into We Buy Any Car or similar to minimise your losses and it will just be sold on at auction or somewhere.
I had a 2008 and it suffered a failed turbo along with camshaft and timing chain at only 50k miles. It seems they were built using poor quality components so don't last very well unfortunately.

keeps saying cylinder 2 is misfiring, the plug in cylinder 2 is also getting oil on it and no others are, the mechanic said it must be the piston ring as he cant think how else oil would be getting to it.. also the oil was low as well which i only filled less than a month ago, so its losing oil as well...
does this all sound like it needs a new engine/rebuild to you all?
keeps resetting it to get out of limp mode, but the lights keep returning and goes back into limp mode soon enough.
I want to get rid of it but its not very easy as I still owe £4000 on the credit card I bought it with. Ideally someone would give me £4000 for it so I can clear that balance and then after this experience, I would happily setup a lease and start a fresh finance. Cant afford to be paying 2 cars at once
Any suggestions?

A compression test, as already suggested a numbdr of times, will confirm whether it is a cracked piston / piston ring and if compression is low then a rebuild is required. If a rebuild is required and you decide to go ahead with it then make sure you use the updated pistons and parts that are used on the later, more reliable engines.
Personally, I would put a new plug in, drive it to WBAC and cut hour losses.

Bit of a long question I would appreciate clearing up, just as a just incase precaution..
Just over 1 month ago before I had the first warning light, so when the car was OK...... The oil light came on for me to fill up the oil.
1st question is regarding that. I filled up the oil within 10 minutes of receiving that message but if I was running low on oil prior to the light coming on, could that have caused any of this engine problems I am getting now such as mis firing?
I went to Motor World for the oil, he asked for my reg plate and then provided me with the correct oil I needed. I did not question his choice and poured the oil in, cannot even remember the type of oil. Not that I am blaming anyone, but
On the off chance of that being the incorrect oil for my car, could that oil used be causing any of this trouble I am now getting from the engine, such as mis fires?
Finally, he gave me a 1 litre bottle of oil. I poured in roughly 1/2 and took a measurement of the oil but still could not see the oil level on the rod (The min / max indictiator isnt the best on these rods though, it is hard to see), following that I then poured the remainder of the oil into the car.
So I poured in 1 litre of oil.
Could that of produced any engine trouble such as misfires?
When I went garage the other day, after paying him £80 to fix the wiring fault as the engine light came back on again and car was back in limp mode, he reset the computer for me once again and checked the oil. He noticed the oil was again below minimum so he topped it back up for me.
Yesterday I successfully drove 20+ miles without any engine lights coming on, albeit I drove like an absolute grandad... Did not rev over 2000 at any point, quickly jumped into gears..... 4th gear before 30, 5th gear at 40... 6th gear up to 50mph, did not go over 50mph. Car can probably go faster when its actually in limp mode.
Any knowledge people able to put all this together and jump to any conclusions, summarise maybe?
