Just got back from the stealers and had my minor service.

The service manager asked who had fitted the new rear tyres.

I told him a local tyre fitter and he said that because I had more than 3mm difference between the tread, back to front (7.5mm vs 4mm) I needed 2 tyres on the front.(And then tried to sell me some Dunlops)

I have heard of this with permanent 4 wheel drives like the Impreza but not with cars like the Golf r which is front wheel drive most of the time.

I have looked in the manual and can't find anything that says they should have the same wear.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Utter bks.

As if a couple of extra mm tread depth is going to make any real difference.

If you had got the incorrect profile tyres then yes, but just tread wear no.

There can be big problems due to tyre differences. The yaw control and ABS sensors work within a certain tolerance. I had an issue with an old A3 Quattro a couple of years ago. ESP cut power when cornering. It was down to tyre circumference.
More recently a few months ago I had a Subaru WRX STI on a 14 plate. The difference in tyre tread was similar to yours but the 4wd light flashed and turned off 4wd DccD.
All tyres have different circumferences, so although you have a difference in tread depth of 3mm it may be more with different tyres. In my case the slightly worn Dunlop RT on the front conflicted with the brand new Dunlop RT2 on the back (couldn't get RT any more) Putting New RT2 on sorted it.
Only really a problem if you started getting issues like I had though.
It even happened on the Pistonheads test car, so its more common than you think.
