My wife wants to change her car, but needs a 7 seater, and it looks to me as if the Q7, which she likes very much, is going to push the budget. too far, unless it is a 6 year+ one.

Question: is it utter madness to consider a 120k+ miles Q7?

My gut feeling (confirmed by my psychiatrist, who knows little about cars) says it is. I know nothing of the reliability of the 3.0 TS engine or of Q7 reliability.

Any words from the wise please?

The 3.0 tdi engines are refined and quite reliable. Q7s get through tyres quickly though, there are a few threads on here about them.

If you can find a tidy one that's been well maintained then it's possible it won't be ruinous to own, taking into account the reference above to tyre life and also other service items on what is a supremely heavy car (brakes don't last long either!). Small wheels help, and if you see anything better than bargain basement tyres, it's a good sign.

Also be wary of any being passed off with the DPF removed in advance of MOT test catching up with it (especially if the tailpipes look quite sooty) and if your other half will be doing significant town work I'd just avoid diesel completely.

Unfortunately most Q7s of that era are now being run on a shoestring and will have had multiple sets of kids trashing the interior and treating it like a skip! They're usually easy enough to spot and avoid, but to a degree a dealer can polish a turd to make it look half presentable.....

If it must be a 7 seater your other options are Volvo XC90 or something like an S-Max.

Car bought, per-high spec, good colour, and 'make a statement' wheels. Almost immediate problem was electrical glitch in transmission-control wiring caused by coolant valve leaking onto a loom-connector and allowing water to run down and corrode the loom to the next connector), and further glitch in one of the he ludicrous tri-zenon headlights that are over complicated (and also do not like water), and therefore over-priced to replace.

Still Russell Automotive in Kingsbury NW9 sorted the problems, but we shall see what happens when the rainstorms again, or I use a Jet-wash or car-wash.
