Vw transporter

Hi all,I have 2012 vw transporter,I recently took advice on changing the timing belt and I was told every 140k miles or 48 months,my van has only done just under 52k so I'm wondering if it realy needs doing yet,I can't realy understand there being a time limit regardless of mileage??
