MK 4 GOLF ELECTRIC ISSUES

Hi all, wondering if anyone has come across the following issue, which I think could be an earth issue somewhere, but I've never come across this before.

All of a sudden the car has become a bit temperamental when trying to start it. I've noticed that the digital display which shows the clock and mileage, along with the red LED display are blank, but the dash will light up every dash symbol on it. In this mode/stage the car will turn over and start for a second or two before cutting out. If I leave the key in the ignition and leave it for anywhere between 1 min and 30 mins or more the digital displays and LED will light up, and boom, the car starts and runs like normal. Sometimes when driving the display will go completely but do not effect the car, and there's a click sound in the dash and comes back on like normal. Sometimes you can be sat in the car, turn the ignition to starting point so all the dash symbols will light up.

In addition, I noticed the air bag light is now permanently on, so this is why I think it might be connected to and earth issue somewhere.
