VW not stalling
Discussion
Hi,
I was in lovely BH traffic yesterday and with the car in low gears 1/2 it would keep a constant speed and not stall, nothing pressed down on accelerator, adaptive cruise control was off...
I've driven auto for a few years and cannot remember if this happens by default in a manual or not, or is it a vw programmed feature?
thanks

The car controls idle revs automatically so will throttle up as far as necessary to prevent revs dropping below idle. Many moons ago had a diesel Cordoba (1.9 VW SDI) that would do just that, it would go uphill (in a suitable gear of course) with no driver throttle at all and idle speed unvarying. I think I could even get it up to 3rd gear on the flat with no input throttle at all.
Most if not all manuals now will help with starting off and apply revs to stop you stalling. In my Mondeo, if you are just creeping forward in traffic and lift the clutch, the engine will apply the appropriate revs to get you rolling. This also lets you creep without any accelerator. I still stalled it when I got it new though!

Just because, I did an experiment in my 2.0 turbo (petrol) Vauxhall Astra shortly after I bought it. You can easily pull away at idle in first. Then just keep changing up the gears without touching the accelerator pedal. On a flat road it will happily idle in sixth at around 20mph. Not one judder all the way through the gears.
The fuel injection system can add air+fuel at idle, this is meant to be to stop the engine stalling when things like fans or air con compressors kick in. On older cars with cable throttles they would have an idle control valve to let extra air bypass the throttle butterfly. On newer cars with DBW I presume they just open the throttle a little bit.
My old 2.0 16v Passat could get up to 3rd gear with no throttle input without juddering.
