Evening all, hope I can get some meaningful advice here regarding an issue I have with the wife’s car.
It’s a 2014 Tiguan R Line 177 DSG with 15,500 miles on the clock and full VW history.
Each morning upon setting off there are two or three ‘clunks’ from the gearbox/ drivetrain. They’re quite obvious and you can even feel them sometimes as well as hear them. Took it to VW, left it with them overnight and they reported back the next day everything was fine.
Took it back a few days later and again left it overnight but this time went out with a technician in the morning and showed him the problem.
He felt it was occurring whilst in gear and not during a change up or down. Said he’d contact VW technical dept and go from there. Had a call next day to say he’d gone out and done everything the tech dept said to but it still showed up as a fault on the system so it needs a new gearbox, clutch, transfer box and mechatronic. That’ll be £5,700 please sir...
They can’t say what the problem is but if I change everything, hopefully that’ll fix it.
Anyone have any idea what the problem may be? I’m thinking it could be the mechatronic system at fault as I’m led to believe that engages the next gear depending on conditions and it always sounds like it clunks when it’s firmly in a gear.
Thanks

Take it to an indy gearbox specialist, just ensure they deal with dsg's as many dont.

A, they maybe able to diagnose themselves rather than making a phone call and B, will be cheaper to repair than VW

I would suggest a call to vw customer services expressing your extreme disappointment with having to pay for a replacement gearbox on a car that is reasonably new and covered very little miles in comparison.

I’ve called them, they’re not interested in the slightest

I don't know if it even still works, but try WhatCar's helpdesk.

Have they said why?

Full Vw service history on the car I'd have thought there'd be some goodwill.

Have you owned it from new?

15,000 miles and they are saying you need a new gearbox? eek

As above avoid main dealers and find VAG indy that deals with DSG, I'm sure I've seen a place that refurbs mechatronics units for about £500.

Also how did it go from everything is fine to suddenly its a faulty gearbox that needs replacing? To tell you its fine the first time around did they not do a diagnostic?

I’m the second owner. It was bought from a decent garage who, to be fair to them, are taking ownership of the problem which is good.
It amazes me how it can go from A1 to needing £6k of work to ‘hopefully’ fix it.

Ah that's good news then, don't go back to that dealer again haha.

Even though its 25k under, maybe its worth getting a filter and oil change on it, sometimes that fixes certain problems.

My indy said DSG should be changed 4 years/40k, although my service book just says 40k. I read up and the earlier DSG R32's they recommended 4 years but they must have changed it to just 40k.

I had similar with a faulty instrument cluster on our S5 - reported fault at service at 4 years old and was presented with a 'quote' for about £1500 to replace it! Needless to say I ignored it until the fault became bad enough to warrant doing something - in the meantime Audi had given main dealers more say over goodwill.

In your case I'd speak to the service manager at the dealership that presented you with the bill and ask them specifically to explore goodwill.

In my case I ended up paying 10% of the bill with Audi picking up the rest - was less than the excess on the extended warranty, so was happy with that.

What fault codes is the box reporting?
