Golf R help - 7.5 or 7?
Discussion
Hi guys
Currently in the market for an understated speedy hatch and a golf R seems to fit the bill. I am trying to reduce the amount of pain and financial loss I incur when the MK8 comes out later this year though. Which do you think would produce the best results?
1) Buy a new 7.5 R DSG for 29700ish and PCP it for 3 years @ 5%
2) Buy a used 7.0 Manual for 18500 outright
My gut tells me that a used 7.0 has already swallowed quite a lot of depreciation, I don't need the shiny dash/new infotainment etc in the 7.5 and that the MK8 will reduce the 7.0's value a lot less than it will the 7.5
Or am I a maniac for tying up 18k of my own capital in a car when I could just get a 7.5 and have no initial outlay?
What do you guys think?

I'd go for a 7 but get a late one as they added extra kit. If I remember right anything Week 22 2015 build onwards gained MIB2 Infotainment, Heated front seats and Keyless entry. So late 15-plates and all 65s. A 5dr DSG with Nav for £20k would be a pretty solid buy with a bit of warranty left and easy to sell on again

I don’t think that’s accurate. My 65-plate has MIB2, but doesn’t have heated seats or keyless. They did introduce those changes for the GTI, but not the R.
Agree with your choice mind, though I’d stick with the manual ‘box. I still get far more enjoyment out of my manual R than my DSG one.
New Golf is late 2019 not 2018 and how long before the R comes out?
The older car will cost you less, they pretty much always do but a new car is always nice. Whether you PCP or lease the new one doesn't change this, it's just a cost of capital argument but if the £18k is coming off deposit or it's in shares and you think the market will fall or flatline then spend the money. Of course a good slug of the £18k would make the monthly payments on a PCP very low...not helped I know.
