Hi Again, I have a 2011 Polo 1.6TDI CAYB coded engine. Covered just 56000 miles with full service history.

The problem I am having isn’t that the car is burning Oil (ahem TFSI wink ) but when checking the dipstick the Oil level is way off the scale, by at least 5mm. The car was serviced 6 months/5k ago and the oil level was perfect then, it did this the before the last service however I was unable to compare because I wasn’t sure if the garage i had it serviced at had overfilled it....

I am 90% sure it’s diesel. It smells very Diesely and is black, the coolant level hasn’t changed at all.

I’ve read “Active” DPF regenerations can cause this, as the extra Diesel injected into the cylinders can seep past the rings and end up in the sump. The car tends to do an active regen every 200-250 Miles or so, considering the majority of my driving is city dwelling (10k a year) I don’t think this is excessive, as soon as I notice it regening il take it for a longer drive to let it do it’s bit!

These are my options:
1- Change the Oil (every 6 months instead of a year)
2- Suck out the excess oil/Diesel and live with it
3- Piston Rings???
4- Sell it and get a Petrol
5- Remove the DPF (would rather not)

Any Ideas on what else could be causing this? Have a friend with a 2014 Golf 2.0 TDI who doesn’t leave town and has covered 20000 miles in 4 years, she’s never had an issue! So why would my Polo (Polo=City Car!) have issues....

Thanks

A lot depends on driving profile if that 10K a year is all short journeys then diesel probably isn't the best choice. I'd certainly up the oil change intervals. Also just sucking some of the diesel fuel/ oil mix out won't help as it'll all be contaminated. Diesels run high bearing loads & need decent oil as a part of that.
I'd be getting the oil changed PDQ. Long term you'd be better with a petrol.

You have bought the wrong car for your driving style.

I do tend to agree with you, however when I bought the car I was doing long motorway trips, 20k a year. Last year I moved to town, therefore slashing my mileage in half. By September il be back to a long 50 mile a day commute.

Thanks, I think I am going to get the oil changed and keep the car, as quoted above hopefully by September il be back to the usual diesel miles. Would switch to Petrol but such a hastle as nobody wants to buy Diesels anymore!

Probably because the Golf is getting 5K mile oil changes.

I sell second hand cars for a living and diesel sales are exactly the same as they were 6 months, a year or even 3 years ago. We have not seen a decline in diesel vehicle sales and don't think we will for a long time yet.

I'm not saying buy a petrol for the sake of 6 months though, as mentioned you'll be better off changing this oil out now and carrying on. If it were me I'd also be changing it come September time prior to doing the big commute again.

New car sales (of diesel) have plummeted - down 25 % year on year in Jan - and while you may be selling the same number second hand as you were 3 years ago, are they not selling for a lot less ( you can sell anything at the right price)? I would be gobsmacked if second hand market has remained stable while new car market has collapsed.

BMW have started their dumping of Diesel. Other manufacturers are also getting out. I certainly would sink money into a diesel, or an EV for that matter.

I'm hoping they'll go up in price as there'll be a shortage of them! Missus has an EU6 Tiguan so should be OK for a while yet, and reading the forums owners who've switched to petrol knew they'd take an MPG hit but it's worse than they expected.
