Is this a thing? The car makes lots of grumbling noises from the wheels when doing low speed turns (>15mph), especially when doing three point turns I can hear it. Apparently its a common thing, nothing to worry about, but tell me I'm wrong?

The car does have some weird tyres on it as well, different brands front and back.

I've been driving an A6 Quattro since 2003 and have never had a 'groan' from the drivetrain. What sort of mileage is on the car? My last A6 went to 150k before I changed and it wasn't groaning then!

I can't imagine this is the case but Limited Slip Diffs groan a lot at slow speeds - maybe your car has a secret history as a rally car???

I'd get it checked out by someone who knows Quattros.

Proper Quattro will sometimes scrub the tyres, especially when they are cold/old/crap if you are going full lock.

To use an Audi euphemism, this a characteristic.

It is more noticeable with worn tyres and is related to the steering geometry, IIRC it is the ackerman angle. I'm sure someone will along soon to confirm this.

This ^^. It is indeed the Ackerman angle that causes the front tyres to 'scrub' at slow speeds when on lock. I would be more concerned if it didn't do it. smile

Yep, had this on every Audi Quattro I’ve owned. And I’ve had about 5 from memory.

This needs sorting out though.

Also, how unrefined of Audi for this haha. The X5 has permanent all wheel drive, 40/60 split and yet there is no noise whatsoever, other than heavy SUV croaking when you get in! No noises when turning, no noises when at speed.
