Hi all,

Wonder if anyone here has any experience of the first generation S3's, with the turbo 1.8 engine. This is the example in question. Aside from the mileage, which is of lesser importance to me than the legitimacy of the recent work done on the car, can anyone contribute other issues to question the buyer about?

Seems well specced with the 2-tone, BOSE, and lovely colour. £3800 is the asking price as below.

Thanks in advance.

In the link is a very good buying guide for the S3 8l.

They are fantastic cars. True all weather ability, great at cruising on the motorway and they handle very well in the twisty bits.

Only issues i have had are, indicator relay and a warped fan in the blower motor. All easy to fix. Also drivers seat can wear badly on the right side.

With the one you are looking at, just beware mapped cars may have other issues and alloys are not the standard ones.

If you would like to know anything else, please feel free to ask.

Hi, very good cars and strong engines however things I would bear in mind are:

1) Clutch, thoroughly test on test drive as at this milage will be very worn if on original. Could be used as a bargaining tool.
2) Check for regular oil changes during its life as the sump oil pick ups are known to clog if they havnt been serviced regularly.
3) clarify what the 'engine overhaul' entailed, why it was needed and who did the work.

Hope this helps,
David

Thanks you two, both helpful posts. I've some thinking to do now, for certain!

In this rare case I actually prefer these alloy wheels to the originals, which are a bit too... well... basic for my taste! Whether or not I *need* this car is the main issue that needs negotiation on with the O/H. Perhaps the 'practical' argument might help, as it has 4 seats at least...

Didn't the S3 have chrome mirrors?

Also - I think the fuel sender units can play up on these, indicating a 1/2 tank of fuel when it's actually empty.

I took my old 02 8L S3 to over 215k miles, it was a great car good all rounder and really took a beating through the winter in and out of farm tracks. It was still going strong when I sold it to a chap who wanted the engine, I still the miss the heated seats and the fun in the snow/ice I did over 50k in it. I did a readers ride thread on it in 2016 I think.

Most of the pcv/intake/boost hoses were perished, I upgraded all of them for silicone items and it really made a difference to how the car ran, I used good oil and plugs but all other parts were bought at ECP sales and I never had any problems. I got a clutch and flywheel for a little over £300 in the sale and they lasted the 50k hammering I give it during my ownership. Make sure you change the oil pick up pipe they are notorious for blocking up then starving the turbo of oil, when I changed the mine it was very sludgy.

I've actually been scouring the classifieds looking for another as the 320d commuting shed is near 220k and I need a petrol turbo again. Shop around because there are examples with similar/less miles around for less money
