I know that the 7 speed DSG gearbox has suffered major issues due to originally being filled up with synthetic oil but I believe that they are now filled with mineral oil from circa 2015.

I’d like to know what the reliability of the box is on cars from 2015 onwards.

I’ll be buying a nearly new car very soon and one of the VAG 1.6 TDI/DSG cars (Octavia/Leon/Golf) are very much on my shopping list. The 2.0 TDI with the wet clutch 6 speed DSG is a bit overkill for what I need but I don’t want to buy a 1.6 TDI dry clutch DSG if it is a ticking time bomb.

Likewise, I think the dry clutch is sealed for life whereas the wet clutch needs a £200 service every 40k. (But is this a ‘save now, pay later’?)

My plan is to buy a car that will do 120k miles over 4 years.

Thanks in advance.

I'd be interested in replies to this too.

And presumably the DSG in the petrol and diesel's is the same unit?

Just an update (I’m OP), I decided to buy a. 2.0 diesel in the end so that car came with a 7 speed WET clutch.

The dry speed is only on 1.6 diesels and smaller cc Petrols.

Never did find a definitive answer but I ended up buying a larger engined car anyway.

Good luck.

I think the early ones were a bit problematic but later ones were better.

The only issue is they are a little snappy at low speed as there is no wet clutches to soften the engagement of them

I used to be terribly worried about an old dsg golf I had. Got rid at 80k adamant it was due out.

It’s now down 225k so I’ll quietly eat my words.
