A very Happy New Year to you all.

My wife and I are thinking of buying either an Audi A4 or A6 within the next 18 months. We don’t use the family car too much since my wife & I use public transport to get to and from work, we would do approx. 6000 mile per year. We have 2 teenage kids and the car would be for the family.
Apart from price and size, what other things would we need to consider whether to buy an Audi A4 or A6? What size and type of engine should we look for? How old should the car be? Is buying a car with 50k on the clock already a bit excessive?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

So many variables. Let's start with - what's your budget, what do you want from the car, how old are you prepared to go? Do you prefer a main dealer/independent/private sale? At that annual mileage a diesel would not make much sense, but you may find that the majority of second hand options are diesel. 50k on the clock is nothing in the grand scheme of things, given your intended usage. How long are you planning on keeping it? Your needs are fairly similar to my own, and I very nearly bought a second hand S4 Avant last year, before looking elsewhere.

If you are doing only 6k miles per year then I would not bother with a diesel.
Will it be mostly town driving or what?
50k miles is nothing these days.
It really all depends what you would be using it for. There are many engines from 1.4tfsi up to the bigger 3ltr plus ones!

There have been a few threads on here over excessive oil consumption on the 2 litre petrol models. Maybe worth checking whether all models/years are affected. Agree with other posters that if you're doing low mileage/lots of short trips that a diesel could bring problems of its own - DPF etc....

Also consider a VW passat, top end options available for bog standard A4 prices.

Of those two options with teenage kids, the A4 would be a better bet due to rear passenger space.

It's almost non-existent in an A4.

Or as mentioned above, a Passat is almost on par with an A6 in terms of size and you'll get a better Passat than you will A4.

If you don't need an Estate car and you're doing 6k a year, you're in luck. Diesel estates are the most expensive and petrol saloons are the cheapest.

Although I suspect that may change now that diesels have been re-classified as evil.

Sorry - that was meant to say A6 is better.

If you're doing so little mileage, you might want to look at the lease costs of a 1.4 petrol A4 - there's been some ridiculously cheap offers in recent times.

Again, depends on budget and expectation though! Sounds like you're looking at older, but if a brand new one can be leased for not a lot more than £2k a year...
