Hi, new to Pistonheads but i'm told its the place to come to ask those who know!!! I want to buy one of the cars above but don't know which. I would be going for either the 2.9 vr6 VW Corrado or the 2.8 vr6 Audi Coupe Quattro. You can get pretty similar standards for similar money but which is the best? I love the way both look so thats not so important. Just want to know which handles better and which is more reliable really. Any advice would be gratefully received!!

Corrado by a country mile for fun, speed & handling, similar reliability.

Tho if it was S2 you were thinking of, maybe a different answer...

ps Audi coupe diddnt use a VR6 engine, just a regular v6.

What he said, Corrado every time. Better looking, way quicker and much much better handling.

Welcome to PH

I have a Corrado VR6. I love it and would heartily recommend it to anyone. (I am fairly new, though, to Corrado motoring.) It really is fun: bags of torque, smooth acceleration and great handling. My advice would be to test drive both over a range of different types of road and then decide which you find the most comfortable and fun to drive.

Corrado... unless you're considering an S2 in which case I'm not sure...

Try them both and then decide

Corrado...unless you must have 4wd and air-con. Air-con is available on only small handful of Corrados.

Ok guys, haven't been on for a while but just to clear something up here, something that is a regular misconception.
The VR6 engine is totally different in all respects from that of the Audi; as is the transmission.
In the VW the engine is mounted transversely and is a narrow angle V6 to give more room in the engine bay.
There are two consequences to this. The first is that it is more prone to overheating than the Audi unit and is a pig to work on.
Because the Audi is inline with a proper transaxle to transmit the power it is an absolute turbine and is actually more economical than the VW, particularly on motorway driving.
There is I'm afraid no comparison in build quality between the Coupe and the Corrado; the VW is a really nice car yes, but it simply does not compare to the Audi in sophistication, particularly the suspension.
Sorry Emma, I know this will hurt!!

Hi Iolaire! I was wondering where you had been hiding The suspension is somewhat hard on the Corrado and mine has been uprated to make it even firmer (my dad complained a bit about that ). I am trying not to think about how much money I have spent on petrol since I bought it. Shell love me, I think.

Just to put things into perspective, when I bought my Corrado VR6 in 1996 it was over £20k and a used Audi S2 was £30k, putting it well outside my price range.

The fact that the Audi S2 and Corrado VR6 have now achieved near-parity on purchase price is a testement to the lower depreciation of the Corrado.

The fact that the S2 is better that the Corrado in many respects is perhaps due to their difference in initial purchase price.

Also, don't forget that, whilst a car may depreciate to the point at which the purchase cost is affordable, the bills don't. So I would hazard a guess that the S2 might be more expensive to run, but this is just a guess and I'm happy to be corrected.

Edit: Just to agree with Iguana, if we're talking about anything less than an S2 then the Corrado wins hands down. The S2 has a similar power-to-weight ratio to the Corrado (to within a couple of BHP/tonne). The lesser Audi Coupes are significantly worse.

Different kettle of fish I know, but I had a Golf VR6...Handling aside, I didn't find the engine that good considering it was a 2.8 V6.

Granted, the corrado is a beauty, but I favour the audi engine which, to echo IOLAIRE is a stronger and much torquier unit.

The Golf VR6 gives away 16bhp to the Corrado VR6 and an equivalent amount of torque, has a smaller thottle body and also weighs more, thus giving it a much worse power-to-weight ratio. It also has infinitely more wallowy suspension. So all-in-all not really comparible.
