A6's...quick question
Discussion
Hi folks,
Which is the best option do we think.....Mostly stuck in traffic type driving apart from the odd motorway drive, an A6 tdi or A6 1.8t....
The 540i is guzzling a bit too much of my tvr fund away so a bit of streamlining is in order...
If anyone has any knowledge of these cars I would be grateful. I am a bit of an audi fan after my 215,000 miles in an audi 80tdi that refused to roll over.
Or is the A6 just a posh passat which would be the cheaper option.
Ta in advance folks.
Mike.

"A6'S...QUICK QUESTION"
Well, they're not exactly "quick" that's for sure!
I haven't really any right to comment as I've got the old petrol driven version (2.4SE from 27-32mpg normally). But I would go large as possible! Some good old diesel torque would probably help there. It's a big old barge remember! I'd liken it a bit to one of the old 3-litre Senators, you know the chip-cutter grill? Big luxo-feel, then a bit of oomph in a straight line. Just don't wish/want/hope/pray that it'll go round corners!!!!
Never had a Passat myself, but a team member had one as a co car a few years back and I would say that that's a good, and possibly cheaper (running cost, rather than initial outlay) option. In fact I know a couple of people who quite rave about the Passy.
I expect you know (Audi-wise) to look out for cam-belt and what-not in the service history as the mileage racks up.......

1.8T 29-30mpg . TDi 40-45mpg
For that price you may be able to get a 115Hp PD engine as opposed to the 110.
Both cars are very well made but have you considered a Skoda Octavia? You would get a newer car with less mileage for your money.
Depending on the size of your kiddies perhaps an A4 would be a better suggestion.

I would suggest the Passat for your price range, go for the TDi the torque is useful. I have just changed my 2001 Skoda Octavia TDi for a 2000 A6 V6 TDi, the quality of the Skoda was absolute rubbish compared with the Audi. Problems with the Skoda in 10 months and 22,000km include:
Both rear number plate lights rusting away completely, cruise control worked occasionally only, switch for recirculation of the air in the cabin sometimes worked, sometimes not.
NSF (right side) front problems with disk rubbing on soemthing when turning left, nobody solved this one.
On the plus side was the fuel economy, overall average of 48mpg, performance was not exactly brisk, this was the 90bhp version as it was the 4x4.
Still on the first tank of fuel in the A6 but it is looking like 30-35ish mpg, the engine is 180bhp or even 205 bhp, the papers show 150kW rather than 132. Performance is very good for a diesel, the tiptronic is great and the quattro means no wheelspin off the line.
Edited to add: Forgot to include the fractured fuel line woes to the Skoda story. Car would not start, turned out to be a fractured fuel line upstream of the pump, so sucking air, no fuel loss. After being 'fixed' the car then ran out of fuel when registering between 1/8 and 1/4 tank, computer showing 100km to go...... Massive airblock I think, never did sort that out!

Thanks for the replies....that does surprise me about the skoda build quality, must admit, We run vrs's as our anpr vehicles in work. They seem to be standing up very well to hamfisted coppers ranting them around the roads.
The 2.5v6 TDI I agree is the one to go for, but they are few and far between, I think there are only a few available on a nationwide search on autotrader. I'll keep my eyes peeled.
The A4... Kids would fit (7 and 2) I do like the shape of the avant, but I think the saloon looks very dated, especially when sat next to the bmw that is going. But then again, I think I prefer the A4 to the passat....

Best plan 2.5TDi, 1.9 is a bit slow even when tuned. The 1.8T can be tuned to give a lot more than 150BHP and it can be switchable from the cruise control stork so you just fill with Super unleaded and flip the switch to boost the power.
Early A6s did not have the so called Sports suspension as standard and wallow badly. Bigger wheels help as will uprating the dampers when you need to replace them. I have run two A6 1.8Ts to over 120K miles without major problems. Saloons go from about 3.5K, Avants from about 5K as these only became available in 1998.

I have noticed the 1.8t's are very reasonable for what they are. Performance isn't the issue really, although I don't want a completely pedestrian car. I suppose they can pick their skirts up a bit. Also, I suppose saving a few quid in buying a petrol car will offset the lower mpg - but then again, diesel is more expensive at the pumps.
Hi Craig,
I have sent you a maily, all depends on me flogging the 540i and whether the Mrs would go for a 124 series. I have had them before, and prefer them to the newer models, but she has to be happy with them.
I should really put the effort into selling the beemer, but it's just so good at everything (apart from fuel consumption)
Mike.
