I fitted an Induction kit to my Golf TDI 130 today but came across a big problem.

The airbox comes out and there is a new bracket for securing the air pipe, MAF and new filter.

Once complete and with everything tight I tried a test run.

It reversed off my drive very easily with much less right foot than normal, so good so far I thought.

1st gear, not much acceleration - strange
2nd gear - got to 2000rpm then cough cough splutter splutter. Turned around and limped home.

Checked all joints for security, I hadn't disconnected anything on the engine side of the MAF, the new filter was snuggly fitted the only thing I could see was that the MAF was vibrating alot. The new bracket was secured to the gearbox mounting bolt tightly and the jubilee clip around the pipe to this bracket was also tight.

2nd try - same thing happened.

Took everything off and started again double checking that everything was tight.

1st,2nd,3 gears perfect - Throttle response was slightly better, it had more pull from lower down in the rev range and pulled cleanly past 4000rpm.
4th gear - 30mph - 80mph roll on acceleration - very happy with performance

Cough cough, splutter splutter.

Drove home at 30mph with no accelration, car would just burp, fart and cough out smoke if I tried.

Put original airbox on - Perfectly ok again.

Was this all due to the MAF vibrating too much?

I thought they used 2 thin film resistors that measured how much air passed it, how can vibration affect this???

The lesson I have learnt in all this is that the standard filter is restrictive so I think a panel filter will be on my shopping list, maybe even a Mercedes MAF which is supposed to give good results too.

If the MAF was vibrating a lot then that is bad news, they are notoriously fragile.

I wouldn't say it was vibrating so much that it was a blur more the fact that it was moving and in its standard setup it doesn't move at all.

I'm just happy that putting it 'back to normal' has resumed normal operation again!

TBH there are plenty of people with 130PD running cotton cone type filters with no probs.
