I noticed at the weekend, that after driving my Golf, a small damp patch was appearing under the fuel pump, which smelt like petrol.

On closer inspection, it looks like the fuel pipe is leaking as it passes the fuel pump(I suspect it's split - the pipe is rusty in places, but seems sound & it clean under the rust). It's only leaking very slightly (4/5 large drips once the car is parked/switch off. The car doesn't leak when left over night.

The pipe that is leaking is the return from the fuel filter (back to the accumulator?).

My question is this : I presume the line is pressurised, but to what degree ? Can I cut out the leaky section & replace with a braided section with jubilee clips while I get new pipes made up.

And following on from that, where can I get replacement fuel lines ? I don't mind making/fitting them, but can't find anywhere (on the web) that sells metal fuel lines/connectors.....

Thanks (as always)

Olly, the return line wont be pressurised to any degree as its just the retun to the tank.
You can use fuel hose as long as its got a burst pressure well above the feed pipe (just for safetys sake).
Getting metal pipes made is a pain in the backside.
You can buy a replacement pipe called Kunifer 10 thats made of a copper alloy that dosent rust ever and is made in the size youd need and comes in rolls of around 15 feet iirc.
The ends are a bit more difficult to have made up as theyre usually double/single lap flared joints formed on the actual pipe itself.
You need to find a specialist fuel injesction centre...maybe Southern Carburettors?...who may have the kit to perform the operations to the pipes.

On the other hand as its the return pipe youre replacing then i dont see why you cant just use a couple of stainless jubilee clips to secure it.
It should be ok for that purpose.
HTH.

Olly,

You may have fixed this by now, but I can confirm that the return hose can be easily fixed with some rubbe rhose and jub clips.

You CANNOT do this with the feed line though. Be sure which is duff.

And bear in mind that if one is gone, the other may well be at the end of the road ... and rubber pipe and jub clips is a botch.

The line from the accumulator to the filter is the pressurised feed line. The return line goes from the fuel distributor directly back into the tank.

I just realised I never replied to the replies !

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I've actually found a company that will supply new lines made to measure & are £25 for the return & £27 for the feed (prices + VAT & postage).

They can make any line to order, so here is a link in-case anyone else should stumble across this thread !
