Corrados beat TTs at Oulton park
Discussion
Hi All,
Went to Oulton park yesterday and enjoyed a very interesting race which saw Corrados up against Audi TT's (and some Pontiacs at the back of the field). Although the TT's kept up through the twists and hairpins, on a straight drag up the hill the TT's just couldn't match the Corrados for pace.
I was thinking the owners of the TT (Newer, more expensive cars) must have been gutted to have been beaten by the much older more impressive Corrados.

I have to say, back then 190bhp and 2.9 litres in a Golf Mk II (maybe Mk III) sized shell must have seemed mightily impressive.
Has anyone yet put the 3.2 in a Corrado or Golf? Might be interesting, in an Alfa-Romeo-147-GTA kind of way (alas without the sound!).

Just to be picky, I believe it was 195bhp -- and it was a Mk.II. Fab cars...

Few chaps working on them now, should be a few around in the summer, its not the power thing so much tho as quite a few Mk1 & 2 golfs around with 300+bhp & a few with 400+bhp but its the noise & the fact its a big tuneful NA lump, not a tiny 4 pot with abig hair dryer on it etc that appeals to many.

Corrado is not really strictly Mk2 based tho, more a Mk2 & Passat mix & lots heavier than a Mk2, so more Mk3 weight & it was 190bhp for Corrado.
But yes i drove em when they were new & mighty impressive at the time, tho it was the G60s that imprssed me most I recall.

manek said:Have to correct you there, Manek. VW claim 190bhp for the 2.9L Corrado VR6 (174bhp for the 2.8L Golf). However, you're right that it is Mk2 Golf underneath, although they raided the Passat parts bin almost as heavily.

Not surpising in a car with only a little less power and a lot less weight!

I've owned both a VR6 Corrado and TT 225. I have to say the TT always felt faster up to 100mph, although this was probably due to very short gearing in the TT - 50 mph in 2nd as opposed to 70mph in the Corrado. However, the Corrado was simply awesome above 100mph.
A quick calculation tells me they are both around 160bhp/tonne although there may be more drivetrain losses on the 4wd TT (not sure if that happens with the haldex system though).
In any case, the TT is easily tunable to 270bhp for very little outlay, I can't imagine a Corrado keeping up with that.
Haven't driven either on a track but on B-roads the Corrado is much more fun and involving, it's the only car that I would like to have back some day.
