Last week I bought a brand new Volkswagen Polo 1.2 E from my local dealer.

The dealer told me that there are no servicing schedules, apparently there is a service warning light that comes on when one is due (the engine is supposed to measure the viscousity of the oil, apparently it uses "VW long life oil"). Is it better for me to just wait until the car tells me it needs a service or send it in anyway every so many thousand miles?

My A3 has a similar setup, if you pull out the mileage reset button it tells you when it needs servicing, apparently it is based on some kind of oil sensor.

I must say though that I wonder how healthy no oil change for 'up to' 18,000 miles is on a new car.
