I am thinking of buying a vr6 corrado with 120k miles -I ve had them in the past but with lower mileages

Has anyone experience of these engines as they get old I know 5cyl audis are good for 200k plus are these engines as strong ?

I can't see any cars advertised with over 130k seems a bit worrying

Obviously it depends on how they are treated but I am after a rough idea

Cheers

A good few miles left yet. Check for any lumpy or smokey running which might lead to the expense of replacing valve stem oil seals.

I bought mine with 113,000 on the clock. The owner of the garage I use said that providing the engine had been well looked after and the car regularly serviced with oil change every 10,000 miles, I had little to worry about as VW engines were pretty bullet proof.

Edited to change mileage as I am a complete fool!

They generally blow up soon after 135k.......

Ha ha only jesting- sorry Em

The 2.9engine is not bullet proof tho- not impossible to sort but can be a tad pricey, we have discussed this a couple of times on here- if search function is working now, search this & gen gassing forums.

Hiya.. I have corrado Vr6.. got to www.the-corrado.net for advice on this..

Generally speaking if its been looked after, it should be ok.......though you should budget for the timing chains to be replaced if this has not already been done.. they tend to need doing anywhere between 80-120K (though some VR6s have been known to get to 140-150 without needing this..)

Sold mine on 148k recently, and hadn't had any problems with it... No major issues between the 118k when I bought it and the 148k. And driving it on the day I sold it really did make me think am I doing the right thing? Still tight, still on full power, still a beautiful car.

Wish I still had it...

When I was asking around about the timing chain issue, I learnt a few things. My local VAG dealer was a bit miffed that I should suggest that the timing chain went at all. He assured me that the chain was not something that would go at 100, 000 or so miles. So, I called my local independent garage and spoke to the owner whom, incedently, has spent hours talking to me about VR6s, and other car matters. Anyway, I digress.

The VR6 has an automatic chain tensioner which will automatically take up any slack when required. Now, if the engine has had an oil and oil filter change at the recommended 10,000 mile service interval, this should not present a problem. If, however, the chain becomes loose to the extent that the automatic chain tensioner can no longer cope with the slack, a rattle will be audible. This rattle is a clear indication that the chain is in need of replacement. I was assured that it was highly unlikely that the chain would simply snap without early warning signs.

I hope that this helps and that I have not relayed any of this information incorrectly.

I agree with Emma. The VR6 is a pretty strong and durable engine. I've been around the VW scene for a number of years now and can honestly say I've never come across a case of chain failure yet.

My own car has 136,000 miles on it and the performance is as strong as ever. More than enough to bully a Golf R32

Sorry..should have added I've never heard of a timing chain snapping either....

If it goes slack they do need replaceing though...otherwise if left (and I am told the rattle is very noticeable) it may eventually slip one or two cogs...
