Oil Leak - Mk3 Golf

It would appear that my Mk3 Golf has got its self an oil leak!

Keep on finding small patches on the drive. A quick under the bonnet can show no signs of wear it is coming from. (Head looks clean etc).

I'll have to get it booked into the garage shortly but is there anything i can do in the mean time except keep an eye on the oil level?

I'm guessing that its coming from the sump as there was a bit of oil in that area when it was changed last. (Approx 2 months ago and 3500miles ago).


Once again - Br (Just when I was thinking it hadn't cost me any money in a while!)

Don't both the sump plug and the washer need replacing at every oil change.....

Agreed with what has been said above. I would not worry about it too much.

My Mk2 (1.8) had this again and again. Have a look underneath it but I would think the main culprits could be :

1. Rocker Cover gasket - simply gave up changing this as it kept weeping.

2. Sump Gasket - again, simply gave up changing this.

3. Driveshaft oil seals - this is a mother of a job to do without the right stuff - the advice I had from my dealer (Vindis in Bedford who were fantastic at the time) was don't bother with them, just make sure the gearbox oil is topped up.

I did not touch any of these items for about 5 years after that and I ran the car like this until I sold it with 170k on the clock.

Clean up the engine & see where its coming from, if it is a sump gasket then its not a big job to change the gasket- (tho on a couple of my old VWs when the sumps been off its been the ideal chance to bung in new big end & main bearings & an oil pump to see the bottom end sorted for many yrs to come)

Just DO NOTuse silcone seal type stuff to seal the sump gasket, just a nice new gasket & put it all together clean & oil free & torque up propperly is whats needed, that silicone crap tends to find its way into the oil pump pick up & thats not good.

Aha, Mk3 rubber gasket rather than Mk2 cork jobbie sorts 'em out a treat.

Ok,

The leak has got worse!

I've changed the sump gasket which seemed to sort out half the problem however it appears to be leaking oil out of the side of the engine. (the lower part of the cam belt cover is covered in oil)

Currently just keeping it well topped up but it is using quite a lot of oil.

Starting to sound a bit too noisy for my liking at start up as well.

Garage job??

Thats what my mate has said. The oil does appear to be coming from that area.

Expensive?????

What I think you need to do is go in, ready to change the cam belt, it's tensioner, and all the shaft seals in there. I have done the cam belt on the old 8-V motor in my 1982 Scirocco (US spec) and it was not hard. This is a bit much to tackle outdoors but I am sure many have done that. A good manual like a Bentley will show what you need to do and you can make an informed decision on DIY vs a shop at that point.

Your cam belt is probably getting oil on it, not good. If it breaks you will bend intake valves, really not good. So don't put this off.

You might want to check out the valve cover to intake vent hose, make sure it's clear. Avoid giving it the boot till the oil temp is up where it should be, 50 anyways and I wait till 80C - when your motor is cold, increased blowby, hard, stiff seals, and higher oil pressure can conspire to get this sort of thing going.
