Hiya

I'm currently looking at getting a new car. I can't really afford mega dosh quite yet, but a friend has mentioned maybe selling his 99 T Golf Gti.

It's got about 80k on the clock, has been tuned by AMD with the chip and Milltek cat back (195 wheel bhp), and has the Recaro's and stuff.

My main reason for the large interest is that it's *hopefully, going to be dependable and hold it's value well for a few years while I get my house sorted. Also, it's quite quick and safe...

Since it's been in his family since new, and has had good VW and private servicing, I know it's genuinely been looked after, which is not common when looking for a second hand car.
It's had a cambelt recently, had a new ignition coil(or something) under warranty when it was new as it was misfiring. Also had a boot/rear wiper fix done too.

Is there anything I need to take into account, any recalls I need to look at... any reliability issues I need to be aware of?
I guess with the extra torque, the clutch may be wearing thin now!

It's either this or a 306 GTi 6, but they are gonna be more likely to fall in bits and loose value. Though it would be a better drive... hmmm.

Cheers for any advice!

My wife has had 2 of these...an S reg and a V reg.

The S reg was a dog.

The V reg was great. Bit small for me but well built, and nippy enough. The engines are good proven units, as is everything else (apart from the coil snags) The coil snags affected any vehicle with that engine, be it SEAT, Skoda, audi etc etc...

If you are of large frame and have a back larger than say a 46" you will find the seats too small. I had to wedge myself in, and frankly it wasn't too comfortable. She also had rock hard factory fitted suspension on it which used to shake the teeth out of my head.

Don't get me wrong I am not casting doubt on the car, they are very good, and if looked after should go forever.

I still reckon the Seat Leon looks better though..........sorry...

I'm clearly missing something here.

Can I join in Golf!

But seriously, as a car, they seem quite nice. Really solid and all that stuff, the engine is pretty damn nice... sounds ok with the SS exhaust and goes well with the added power.

I know, they do look dull, made a fair bit nicer in R32 or Anniversary dress.

What other cars would you recommend for £5000 with 60-80k on the clocks, that would have similar attributes, but not be a Golf.

Suppose main attraction other things aside (as mentioned above), I know the history, which is always a bonus!

BTW, was the S reg one a dog for some reason.

I notice the 08/2000 onwards (was that your V reg one), have a different engine, well, a revised engine. Altered turbo and injectors etc, at the same time the 180bhp turbo option came in.

Well, a mint is 306 Gti 6 or Rallye may be the only other choice. Don't want something lethargic or peaky like a Civic mind you!

Also, quotes on insurance for the Gti6 or Golf Gti Turbo are like £1000. Don't really want to go over that. Silly money otherwise!

Hello Dave,
The S reg was just one of those cars, nothing right with it. Probably a friday after noon job....

Wifeys v reg was the last of the 150bhp, so the same as the one you will be getting. Certainly good enough.

Another car in that bracket....Seat Leon cupra? Mungo has a cupra R, and is very pleased with it. My wife also had the Seat, and preferred it to the Golf. It isn't as well put together though (imo) and doesnt have the recaro's...

If you know the history etc, I would go for the Golf, you can't really go wrong...

Yeah, just the old Cupra is not as nice looking as the R, by a long way.

Well, thanks for the advice Mike.

Probably won't keep it too long. I'm budgeting £330 a month for 3 years of replayments and insurance per month soon.
But right now, I need a bit extra for new house I just got, and also student loan repayments of nearly £100 quid take away valueable dosh!

Hopefully in 18 months I can sell the Golf for a good price, and have some nice trouble free motoring in the meantime

Guess Cupra R's might be even better value by then. Just like the idea of an S3 or an R32 for some reason

Would sir be tempted with an M3?
R32's are nice though.

I agree about the older Leons, they look a bit bog standard really. The 'R' models do look nice.

........BMW E36 328i.......As you can probably tell I do like my beemers, the 328's have a lot of power going to the back wheels, and are pretty cheap now....a lot of fun for not much outlay...this could offset the insurance money...

Yeah, an E46 M3 would be nice.

Not sure on the older model. The twin Vanos sounds like trouble waiting to happen, though I'm sure when working right, it's great.

To get one with normal miles, you need to pay ALOT of money. When going that far, an S4 starts to look good value, and is probably as quick on most roads.

E46 328Ci or 330Ci at a push. Nice cars, but right at the top end of my budget for what would be the lowest quality/highest mileage example...

Older 328Ci, yeah, nice cars, but they look so dated now, especially even as the E46 3 series is now superseded! However, out of all the cars, BMW gets the most respect for engineering and driver rating... Who cares if they have a bad reputation, I'd try change that if I owned one Then again, maybe the badge makes you that way

I dunno, choosing a car is so tough... But for now, the Golf looks like a good solid investment that shouldn't go too wrong or loose too much in the next year or two.

Could turn this into the 5-10k budget car thread
