mark 5 golf rear hub 30mm or 32mm

No, they can't!
Did they fit it for you? If they fit them in the workshop then they order both sizes and then use appropriate. If you fitted it, you just got lucky! I spoke to VW yesterday and they told me this.
So I take it you don’t remember which one you had? If you do, was it a gti and what year? Thanks

Mine's an 07 Edition 30. Seriously, I just gave them my reg no. and picked the bearing up the next day. Yep, fitted it myself. They usually have details of the chassis changeovers on the system, so this sounds a bit weird that they don't know!
I fitted it last September and don't know what size it was, sorry!

Oh, no worries. Id love a k04
It seems ridiculous that there’s no way of knowing without taking it all apart – but that’s the truth. Honestly, you got lucky. I took my VIN to the dealer to identify the correct hub ( even though I found out they know the VIN from the reg anyway) and they don’t know which is fitted until they take it off. I’ve seen their screen, it says if 32mm, use hub A, if 30mm, use hub B
Rubbish!

Blimey, what a faff! As you say, I got lucky! I would have been seriously p1$$ed off if I stripped it all down and then discovered I had the wrong part!
I guess all you can do is buy both and then take back the one that's incorrect? I can't see that being a problem if it's a situation THEY have created?
It's an easy job and I'd recommend the 3/4" triple-square socket from VW as it's only about £12. I've seen the same thing on ebay for twice that!! A nice 3 foot 3/4" breaker bar (£20 from Machine Mart) will help you too as the bolt is a tight bugger with thread lock on it. The only faffy bit of the job is removing the caliper carriers as it's difficult to access the bolts, but I managed it with a combination of wobble sockets and swearing.

I know, and ive actually already gambled on a 32mm hub.
I got my m18, m14s from machine mart
VW wont sell me the m18 tool. It’s a real gamble which dealer you go to whether they will sell you the bit or not. Mine was a stickler for the rules so didn’t. yours was obviously more relaxed. Sounds like you have been very lucky with your VW dealer! : )
I’ve tried to replace the hub already, but couldn’t get the height on the axle stands to get the lower calliper carrier m14 bolt to budge, seeing as my breaker bar is 1m long, I couldn’t get enough turn on it. Annoying as it was the last bolt I needed to undo before replacement. Id already undone the m18 hub nut so once that last bolt was out it was just a case of sliding the disc and hub off the shaft and replacing. If I didn’t have to have it done asap (remap in a few days) I would buy a shorter breaker bar to get it done.

Yeah my dealer sell me tools :-) I've been going there for years and built up a good relationship with them! I get the maximum discount without even asking for it. Loyalty can pay off sometimes.
Yeah I ran into the same problem with the breaker bar on the bottom carrier bolt. I think I just used a normal socket wrench and pulled on it as hard as I could!

Hi all,
I'm a newbie to this site, but where better to ask for advice. My problem is, i need to fit a nearside rear hub/bearing on my 2006 mk5 Golf 1.6 fsi, ok so far, but on looking round at hubs in various places i notice that there are 30mm ones and 32mm ones.
I went to a spares shop and gave my reg no. and he said it's still coming up with both sizes? Off i trotted to V.W. main dealer who tells me that it should be 30mm, now i'm really confused, do i trust VW's computer screen. Problem is, the only way i can be certain is to remove the old hub, measure the shaft (or wherever the 30mm/32mm comes from), and then put it back together while i go and shop for the part.
Anybody know of a short cut to finding out the size without all the hassle? Any help gratefully received.

Hi, all (Newbie here Mk5 05 Golf 1.6 FSi),
I managed to change my rear brakes and disks without removing the difficult calliper carrier bolts. The rear disk can be manipulated with gentle movement around the bearing and calliper carrier by using once the brake pads are removed.
My question is can the bearing be removed with the calliper carrier still in place? I think/hope so (not tried yet but I'll update this thread if it works)...I couldn't get the calliper carrier bolts undone (not sure what a wobble socket is but I'll google it).
Ps to see someone remove the disk without removing the calliper carrier I watch a video from CarServicing 4 Less called "Hot To Replace VW Golf Mk5 Rear Brake Pads And Disk?" at 5:44 in. PS I'm not affiliated in any way with the guy or company, I just watched it after swearing at the calliper carrier bolts for the 100th time!!!
Cheers,
j

This bit my son on the bum when he did his. The car was just on the switchover from 30mm to 32mm so no amount of reg' number quoting helped. Luckily a big local motorist shop had the correct one.
Technically it was an easy enough job, physically doing it was another story. The bolts holding the wheel on were silly tight, and getting the old hub screw out was difficult due to the end of the thread being rusted and full of years worth of crap.

I’m with you there unbelievably tight the hub bolt. I had all my weight on the braeaker bar and it was slowly turning. Mine ended up being the 30mm hub. I did buy both sizes though and send back the incorrect size as nothing could determine what size my hub was.Technically it was an easy enough job, physically doing it was another story.
