...or at least a small whisp of it, coming from the steering column via the wiper stalk hole on my 100.

I'm assuming this isn't a good thing? It only did it for about 10 seconds when i started up yesterday evening (having been driven all day), and after a prompt switch off it's not done it again.

I assume the correct course of action is to attack the steering column with various tools and see what essential part of the wiring loom is now a pile of ash?

My Scimitar used to do that all the time. Another example of Audi wiring being only just up to the job. I expect your wiring will be fine though - it'll just be resistance building up inside your no-user-servicable-parts-inside switch. They're about £180 though

Well it's not done it today. If the weatehr cheers up a bit i might attack it with some screwdrivers. That's assuming i don't need special service tool dgf435c to get the thing open?

Actually you just need a crosshead screwdriver, a little electrical screwdriver and some needlenose pliers. It's much easier if you pop off the steering wheel first.

Well i've got the first and last things on that list (screwdriver and steering wheel), and plenty of time so i'll give it a bash.

Actually i just realised i think you mean a small screwdriver for electrical things rather than a powered screwdriver, in which case i'm just missing the pliers.

Excellent.

If you want to borrow the Audi workshop manual give me a shout. Can save a lot of grief.

I'm rather far away to pop round and get it at the moment, but i might take up the offer in the summer.

The plactic on the steering column needs refitting properly anyway and there's something rattling in there too, so the toolkit will be gettign an outing if this weather ever clears up.

this happened to my 80 too. Result being that I've now only got the fastest wiper speed available - intermittent and slow were eradicated all together.

Obviously, seeing as I still have the facility to wipe the screen I've done absolutely nothing about getting it fixed, but the pain is the fact that it's a gamble as to whereabouts on the windscreen the wipers will stop when you flick the swtich off!

I'm assuming this won't constitute an MoT failure (in which case it'll never get fixed!).

My '80 (1991 Sport Edition) did it once and once only. I had no after effects and everything still worked correctly.

I have no idea what made it do it and why, and I forgot about it until now.

Oh and one other thing, it was shortly after I had had the windscreen replaced and I wonder if it might have been a tiny bit of moisture somewhere behind the dash.......

Good luck whatever you decide to do about it!

Cheers,

Steve

"Hmmm, that's a rather nasty smell" said my inner monologue on the way out of Asda's carpark this afternoon. "Crikey getting a bit smokey in here". Look down to see smoke wafting, nay billowing from the steering column. Electrics swiftly off, mobile-chicane-with-hazard-lights-on-roudabout mode engaged, and it stopped. Switch on, smoke starts again. Switch off, wiggle wiper stalk. Switch on, no smoke.

So that'll be my wiper stalk then. It's on its final warning, if it happens again i'll go and get a replacement (actually i might just get a replacement anyway as i'll be down south so i can pop over to AllAudi and send them on an adventure to the darkest corners of their warehouse again).

I'm assuming if i get a set with the cruise control buttons on, my car won't suddenly have cruise control as with the modern ones?

I've had the same problem in my Corrado.. I find wiggling the wiper stalk periodically (every month or so if it hasn't been raining) stops the problem.. I thought it might be dust gathering between the contacts causing a partial short..

So long as i don't go with it then i'm not particularly bothered if this one goes up. Must check the excess for fire damage on the insurance.

My Golf did it as well, turned out to be the earth on the headlamp switch catching fire. Mate of mine has a MK1 that did exactly the same thing. Damn scary when it first happens.
