I want that Mk1 Golf!
Discussion
Right I'm looking to buy a Mk1 Golf so I've been searching on the net for one. I came across this picture and I think I'm in love with this car!
How much would it cost approximately to get a Mk1 up to this sort of standard?! Because I don't really have a clue about them!
Any feedback much appreciated!
Cheers...James

Quite A lot, unfortunately....
I would guess/hope that the ride height is achieved with air ride suspension, which costs a pretty penny. The chrome bumpers, wing mirror and trim are pretty hard to find and commands a fair premium. Are those Porsche alloys as well? In which case, suitable adaptors will be needed along with spacers etc. to accommodate the suspension. The lights/indicators are not too expensive; you can get them from the usual tuners/tat merchants. Given that this is a Belgium car and they are such fans of smoothing, then the chances are it has had all sorts of bits removed, smoothed and repainted from the boot as well, the Aerial has gone already. Not sure if that is a VW paint either.
The Porsche seats and roll cage will set you back a penny or two as well, and then you will need, oh, a 1.8 20vT transplant and a set of decent brakes to lug/stop it all about. I think I have a magazine article with that car in, PM me if interested and I'll see if the wife hasn't chucked it out.

To purely 'look' like that car- not a lot more than £1k or so.
It could be achived with merely a decent spray, a set of cheap porker rims & some very low springs (that car is prob on coilovers tho)
It really tough to say what it can cost at the other end of the scale, depends what you have under the skin & what you want the car to do, but certainly its easy to spend £15+k.

And how exactly would you get the early spec bumpers and rear lights, chrome trim arround the windows, roll cage for less than 1k???. That is a very special car indeed.
I have the Article for the Jan 05 issue of Performance VW sat here now.
The Base car is a '78.

I reckon you could buy the bits in for 1k or less, after all my 6-point cage cost £50, leaves a big budget for the rest. You can buy chrome trim on a roll or fabricate some.
I still have my nice Mk1 Golf. The bodywork is in perfect condition and Im now forced to sell her because the other half wants a newer more comfortable car
I love Mk1's, they have so much spirit and character about them.
The 2.0 16v is a nice conversion too... I wonder how much I could get for her?

I've spoken to the owner of this mk1 it's a real lovely example. It was at last years inter show.
It's a late spec mk1 not a very early swallow tail with chrome bumpers. Getting the bits can add up.
Bumpers 200 - 400
Wheels 200 - 400 excluding painting.
tyres typically very low profile 195/40/16 - 260
Hub adapters - 200
Air suspension - 600 excluding fitting
This car has a 150 bhp 1.8t installed which will be at least 1k if fitted yourself.
VW motorsport gearbox linkage 500
Custom rollcage - 400+
Even the chrome strips, grill, mirrors and handles are becoming rare and collectable.
I've heard of top notch paint jobs costing as much as 10k.

10k for a respray? Thats ridiculous. 4k max is plenty. My old man had a superb job done on his old xjs for this amout. It now looks like a new car and you'd not get a finer job done. The only way to pay more is if the garage rips you off, or you get some tacky max power / tvr flip paint.

You can get complete 1.8Ts at half the price you say
No doubt tho if you want it to be a show car then and money is no object then you can go crazy.

I agree, for me 3k is the limit and I’ve got a mk2 project on the go. The trouble is it's not a simple colour change these cars are being built with smooth engine bays (batteries relocated to boot, inner wings smoothed, scuttle panel removed), painted inside, extended metal arches and painted floorpan. Your really do need a skilled welder and painter.
Arc Engines tend to typically go for this sort of price, however you'll need to ditch the standard ecu in most cases as they are very difficult to implement. Dta and emarald are fairly common mapable units but come is at around 600. You also need a gearbox and brake upgrade.
