Looking to Buy an A6 4.2 for about £8-9K. Haven't any experience of this car, but like the idea. Can anyone give me advice on running costs, fuel consumption, etc

I have an A6 4.2 Sport Quattro - I imagine an A8 would be similar - fantastic performance and noise - fuel economy around 27mpg on a long run, and around 20mpg short trips. This engine requires a major service at 80,000 miles which includes cam-belt change - around £700 using a specialist. Mines had some electrical gremlins (seat motor, electric window and folding mirror have all failed on mine in the last six months) Tiptronic box is really good. Make sure the car is mechanically sound, as with 4 wheel drive, 40 valve V8 engine, and five speed tiptronic box, there's a lot of expensive things to go wrong - generally, they seem reliable though.

Traded my TVR Chimaera in for a S8 last june - drive 800miles/week and average 25mpg - this includes daily meanderings round quiet country lanes as well as 140/day on M4/M5! sure 26-7 would be possible, but to try to exceed this, the way you'd be driving, you may as well stick with a 1.9TDi!!! Great engine in the S8 - tuned to give 360, but even with lesser tunings, i'm reliably informed that the torqueyness makes it a very capable and comfortable beast. sounds good with S exhaust too!

the 3l and 4l TDi engines are superb, the latter AWESOME, but I would choose 4.2 v8 ANY day for combination of performance and sound - anyway at our sainsbury's, the 97 super is 2p/litre cheaper than derv, and the 4TDi isn't that far ahead of v8 if driven enthusiastically.

seems silly to say, but get one with FASH then don't go near a main dealer - 3-4x the cost for parts/labour (damn the small-print on the extended warranties!!!)

hope u buy & enjoy the v8!!!
