recon TT 225 engine, how much?
Discussion
Posted this as a reply in a previous thread so apologies if you are reading it twice.
The cambelt on my brothers TT went a couple of days ago and his engine is lunched. The same Dealer that failed to change the cambelt at the 80K (after saying they would)are quoting £7500 for a rebuild.
I wonder if he has a case for making them pay?
After agreeing to have it done at the service they changed their minds on the actual day the car was in, saying it could wait until 115K.
My brother doesn't know anything about cars so trusted their judgement.
I've also posted another question, how much should he expect to pay for a recon engine - he's been quoted £2500 from a bloke in wales who will collect from london for free.
I reckon this sounds suspiciously cheap. Does anyone have any experience about this?
Thanks in advance.
Matt

If he can prove what he said to the garage and that he relied on their advice regarding the cam belt then he should sue them if they do'nt. pay up- he should contact them ASAP.
He would be wise to keep any Court claim to £5,000 so that it stays within the small claims limit and he is not put at risk in paying a good proportion of the legal costs should he lose.
The county courts provide useful booklets / look at the Court Service website for more info. on the small claims jurisdiction.

IIRC I've seen TT225/Cupra R engines in the VW mag classifieds for in the region of £1800 upwards and this will include ancillaries and ECU etc. Not reconned though! Generally pulled out of accident damaged cars. I would have thought that your brother would be far better off just sourcing a second hand engine. Try ringing round some breakers.
Should be able to get one for ~£1500. You will be able to make back at least £500 selling off bits from the old engine such as the K04 turbo. There is one on the PVW site at the moment for £1450 www.performancevwmag.com/classifieds/ads.asp?catid=22&cat=Mechnical&adtype=s&c=United+Kingdom
